Time to break down and ask for some help. I've got a 97 f-250 HD with a 5.8. that I haven't owned long.
Starts fine idles fine, runs good till I put it under load. Then no power and crapping out.
Cap, rotor and plugs are new.
I'm getting code 212.
What is the quick fix? I have limited diagnostic tools.
You need a black ICM for a 1995 and a 1997 model year F-series gas engine truck(actually 1994 and later all require a black CCD Ignition ICM). Many part manuals are wrong including Ford. Code 212 is stored in Continuous Memory so you need to clear the codes after repairing or replacing a part. The alternative is going through 40 or so drive cycles for the computer to clear the Stored Code.
Once you have the correct ICM installed if you have the same "no power and crapping out" under load issue then check the fuel pressure.
Nice new black ICM, 180 bucks (small town Canadian best price).
No 212 code but still runs like cr--p.
so you say you bought a new black icm? Was it motorcraft or after market. ? Aftermarket’s are junk. I went through this on my 96. If in fact you did use oem and nothing has changed I’d check fuel pressure at the rail under the hood. Pull your vacuum line on the fuel pressure module and make sure no gas is coming out of it.
A lesson learned, (AGAIN) never forget the obvious.
After chasing issues for another day, I decided to go back to basics. The only ignition parts I hadn't changed were the plug wires.
New wires end of problem. I hope. np more codes and runs better
