Selling my 2020 XLT to CARMAX after trying to get the tranny woes worked out on multiple occassions at dealers... and with COBB. I give up. Done.
Buying a 2016 XLT with the SIX speed tranny - pray it has to be better than the MESS I have dealt with with the 10 speed. That transmission is a disaster,
Looked at Rangers, Tacoma's and Tundra's and even considered RAM but love the F150....Come on FORD get your crap in one sock and fix this transmission design.
More to follow when I complete the transaction.
What a P I T A.
That is all.
Pain In The ****
Curious what your 10speed transmission woes were, My 2020 seems fine, knock on wood. Aside from sluggish shifting at times.
Good luck with the 2016.
Our 2020 Navigator is at the dealer now for transmission issues. Wont shift under WOT, then extreme upshift when you let off the throttle, along with a flashing service transmission light. They have had it for 8 days now and are still trying to figure it out. The 10 speeds in our police Explorers are among the worst transmissions I've ever driven.
The Ford/GM 10 speed has had quite a few teething issues, but come on, it's been in production for 6 years now, used in both Ford and GM applications. The issues should be worked out by now. Ford should have stayed with ZF. The 6 speed in my F150 and the 8 ZF in my Wrangler have been flawless. The 8 speed ZF in an F150 would be a great combination in my opinion.
Tranny in my 2016 F150 has been flawless for 6 years now. Matter of fact, the whole truck has been trouble free; all I've done is oil changes and tire rotations since I bought it new.
Sorry to read this - but I do think the ZF licensed trans to be quite strong. Our 10 speed is getting worse: light throttle transition and getting huge clunks, weird delayed shifts, seems ok under moderate to hard throttle, but the clunks are getting more frequent and are pissing me off. Was planning on taking it in with the TSB in fall for an oil change - not sure it'll wait that long...

Praying the six speed is better. For those of you who don't know there are at least four states with class action suits against Ford for the tranny issues. VA is not one of them unfortunately.
In any case I am praying the 2016 I buy turns out better. I have driven Ford F250s for 15 years before this 2020 which was my first F150/ now I am going to get my second....let's hope to God it's better that the first.
I had the TSB completed twice. The second time they said they fixed it.......they didn't, but I don't think they can. I don't blame the dealer I blame FoMoCo.
It doesn't seem like there's been a a lot of complete breakdowns with the 10 speed. Some just seem to shift clunkier than others. The 10 speed in my 2017 was butter smooth up and down shifting. My 2020 isn't too bad but gets a little clunky on downshifts sometimes. It doesn't bother me too much...probably because I'm used to my old hot rod with a performance built 4 speed with a shift kit and it always shifts firm up and down.
I still prefer the 10 speed over the 6 speed because my 2014 suffered from the lead frame issue. That would really make your butt pucker when you would get up to 45 mph and it would drop down to 1st gear literally locking up the rear wheels.

Ok I'll bite. Why do they call it the lead frame issue? I can not find anything on it for the 2016...and for the record neither should be happening with a truck produced by FORD!

There was a recall on some 2011-2013 F150s where the molded lead frame in the transmission would fail. If it did fail the transmission could get stuck in certain gears or abruptly downshift or other crazy stuff. My truck was a 2014 so it wasn't included in the recall but had the issue.

My wife's 2019 also has had no transmission issues to date with 50k on the clock. Granted she doesn't drive it hard and almost never goes WOT. My FIL's 2022 F250 also has the 10 speed mated to the 7.3 and every once in a while he gets a 'clunk' going into gear, but it's very random and MIGHT happen once a month. Otherwise his only complaint is that it seems to downshift from 10th to 9th going up just about any hill on the expressway...But with 3.55's and 35" tires that's kinda to be expected.
Of the 10 people I asked with F150s 8 of them had no problems, two of them did. I just can't risk doing that again and test drove a 2022 XL and every gear was clunky.
I am happy for those of you with no problems, but if there are class action suits in four states there are a LOT of us that have had issues. They need to fix this crap. Again, my friend in Southern MD said all his friends down there are selling their Ford's and buying RAMs. I am going to give this 2016 a try and hope it works well. If it doesn't I am going to (gulp!) another marque. Maybe even Toyota which I sure as hell don't want to do, but the 2019 I test drove was as smooth as melted butter shifting. That is the way it is SUPPOSED to be. I realize it is a truck, so I don't mind a little sharper shifting but I am not dealing with clunky ****. That is unsat.

my last one was fine until I did a maintenace flush then it started shifting hard immediately after leaving the dealership.
