I got an 88 f150 4x4 I gone through the linkage and it's fine. I have checked the selector bolt/pin and it's moving. when I shift it to drive the engine idles down like it wants to drive but wont only revs. It's starting to **** me off.
Does it shift into any gear? Will it go into reverse? What about 1st? Did it drive before? What happened between now and then? Has the trans stopped turning? Is the issue behind the trans? The trans appears to load the engine, dropping the idle, but what is happening at the output of the trans? Maybe get all the wheels off the ground then you can put it in gear and get out and look at the driveline and see if you can see what is turning and what is not. Try all gears in 4x4 and 2 wheel.
I was driving and then it just stopped giving power to the trans and or transferase and acted like neutral. if I shift it to anything it doesn't move and just revs while the truck is running and shift to park it will get stuck either in between park and reverse or reverse. I have checked all the shift linkage and selector. as well as the bolt and or pin of the selector.
Classic symptom of a failed transfer case. Put the shifter in Park then see if the truck rolls by pushing it or parking on an incline, if it does that verifies the transfer case is stuck in neutral or something worse internally. The other cause is something broken in the rear axle. Engage the front hubs then retry the Park test.
but im confused. Ive been told by 2 guys one who does top to bottom complete restoration that the transfer case doesn't affect the truck driving only 4x4

That guy is an idiot. Power always goes through the transfer case to the rear axle.
Virginia isn’t far away. I’ll buy the truck off you for the price of the gas in the tanks. Problem solved.
The shift lever is on the front of the transfer (driver’s side). Is it connected to the handle inside the vehicle? With the transmission in PARK, are you able to turn the front and/or rear driveshaft by hand?
