Blue smoke

So I got 06 6.0 with 155k on it. Had all 8 injectors and the turbo rebuilt about a year and a half ago. Truck runs good and starts fine. It just smokes excessively. Especially after driving it and coming to a idle or stop and then taking off again. I was thinking maybe my turbo. I took it to my diesel guy he said the turbo checked out good. Said he had a few more things to check but was leaning towards the valve seals leaking. He didn't think it was the rings as he said it starts, idles, and runsto good for that. I wont know anything till next week. He said he had a death in the family and had to close his shop til Monday. Anything else it could be? Or are valve seals even an option.

Only way to confirm if it is the seal in the turbo is to remove the downpipe and look for residual oil, my guess is you have oil residue.

Not sure if your guy did that for you, but if he didn't and gave you that diagnosis, find another mechanic that will do you right.

I am betting that is your problem. I rarely hear of valve seals being any kind of issue.

Good Luck

He did pull the turbo pipes and confirmed they are dry. I'm not losing any oil. Just getting alot of blue smoke. I haven't had to add any oil.

Might just be the beginning of the turbo seal failing.

Let it ride for a while and then diagnose it.

I've been letting it ride for a year now and it is definitely getting worse. It's pretty dang bad now. Kinda embarrassing to drive 😆

When my truck did that, and it was pretty bad, it turned out to be the EGR valve. If you still have an EGR valve. Initially I thought turbo or injector. Pull up to a stop light or sign, would be embarrassing.

Totally agree - after all, no evidence of oil leakage.

Do you still have an EGR system?

How can the smoke be oil when you lose no oil? This seems to have been going on long enough that a fluid loss (oil or coolant) should be noticeable.

Egr was deleted 3 years ago, that was the last time the coolant was topped off. It does have a oil leak, a couple quarter sized spots wverytime you park it. Even with the blue smoke and oil leak it never looses enough to need to add to it between oil changes every 5k miles. When my mechanic gets back on it Monday I'll be sure to let you guys know what's going on. I'm not ruling out injector issue but it does run and idle smooth.

Adding oil is typically when you are down to the add line. That is two quarts. You can easily see a loss of 1/2 a quart on the dipstick level.

If the oil loss is 1 quart every 5k miles, then it probably isn't enough to worry about. That said, I understand about the smoke.

Maybe it is oil from the ccv system.

That said, my bet is still an injector (since the EGR system isn't the issue - assuming the cooler is blocked or removed).

Just a little update. I still haven't got my truck back. Talked to the shop owner today and he said he is really stumped as to what is causing the blue smoke. He said he checked the turbo for oil residue and it looked dry. Also said he checked the compression with his scan gauge and all cylinders passed. He says it starts and run to good for him to think that it is the rings. He said he is leaning towards the valve seals but is hesitant on that to because it is a rarity to have issues with that. He said he was going to physically remove the turbo today just to make sure. It is kinda disappointing. I want to sell it but know nobody is going to touch it with it smoking like it is. It's got 155k on it. Guess someone will get a good deal on it if he can't fix it.
