Nice man sounds good ... post some pics up when you get it painted !
When do you need to start messing around with gears ?? when you get 35's for a tire ?? I have 33's ... but sometime in the spring im going to do a 6" lift with 35's ....
I know these guys know what their talkin about, but if the wieght difference in the 2 door vs 4 door makes enough difference to count against the engine then that is sad. also, ignore the pretty good for a 15 yrs old part, cause im not 15. Propane and NOS, under limited amounts, along with a new turbo (aftermarket, like Banks or ATS), a 4" exhaust all the way back witha see through muffler, and an intercooler seem like it would help. But with the lower injection levels of the IDI, due to mechanical injection, im not sure its worth it. Now the question is do i go on to a Powerstroke, in my '93 or a '99-'03 with the Stroker...
Chach, you are right on the money, 33's shouldn't affect the truck much at all, but once you start getting into 35's or bigger, such as me running 37's you will need to start looking at a gear swap. I might have got away with 4.10's but my truck had 3.54's so I was doomed from the get go for gears. If you have 4.10's the best thing to do is lift it and drive it. If the gears feel like they are enough you may be okay. I drove my truck for a few weeks without the turbo with 33's and it drove pretty good, once I added the turbo it was like night and day. 37's on the other hand are heavier and just plain BIG. If your truck is sluggish now chances are you will need some gears to get your truck rollin. I will put some pics up as soon as it gets sprayed.
Now RAWPOWER, your truck sounds pretty good, if you like your truck but don't like the engine, find a 12V Cummins and spend some money, you will get power and longevity all in one and you will have a Ford truck wrapped around a great engine. It will cost you but not as much as a new truck.. Those are the options, plus the 12V is non electronic so you won't have to sweat computers and such, just bolt it in and make it work. Scotty
Spectramac, what are you referring too "If you don't want to do it that's fine with me"? Anyhow I like the trucks, the are fairly easy to work on and don't cost a whole lot to operate. Scotty

Do you wanna race your diesel or something? Go ahead and say all IDI's blow, and I'll come back and tell you these new 6.0 powerstrokes do the same thing, cause they blow up after 3,000 miles. Sure you make 560 foot pounds, but whats the use of all that if its always in the shop getting re flashed or whatever it is. I've seen plenty of IDIs, and own one that gets the job done FLAWLESSLY! A dump truck with no turbo, IDI, getting up on the parkway hitting 75 miles per hour with no problem, pulling loads with no problem. Raw power no offense, but when the guys on this site ask you for information about your truck, dont' second guess it, they know what their talking about. I've been readin this site for two years now and gained a wealth of knowledge from these types of questions. Did you just think that the reason they want to know the length of your truck is because the longer it is, the heavier it is, and the harder the motor is going to have to work push it, AND the load your pulling. Don't give these guys attitude on here for trying to help you, and if you don't like what I have to say, go buy a duramax.
Sorry for the rant and preaching to the choir, it's been a long day, a longer week, and a real long month. Keep on truckin guys
thanks for covering back ,,and backing me up..
just like[spectramac] about dumping the turbo and putting on a differ turbo and you might also want to put on intercooler,,also,,
gear ratios also make a big differs also ,,and I another thing learn from a guy that now about diesel is the way,[fuel goes in the combust chamber is differ between IDI and powerstroke]
rawpower and any other you wantbe real ford truck man///
don't get us real ford truck man-any attitude,,,we are just trying to help each other out..
You don't have to dump the whole turbo, just the exhaust side of it. Ford thought they new better and made new parts for ATS's turbo (all with smaller holes).
Raw Power, I'm sorry if my earlier posts had a little too much attitude in them. The factory turbo'd trucks have been one of my pet peeves since they came out. Ford took ATS's good design and screwed it up in all the right places to take away most of the benefits of turboing the engine in the first place. A friend of mine has a '94 and we went round and round trying to make it go. It's doing pretty good now. It took a fully jacked up Dodge to get around him the other day.
how would i find out what kind of gear ratio i have. i think its 3.55 but it wont go over 80 -85, and its sluggish when i try to pass someone going 60-65. i have a facrtory turbo also. do i need to just change everything from the exhaust dump on the turbo and back. it still has everything original. appreciate the feedback. im learning alot from yall.
My buddies '94 has the 410 ratio. It's an auto, what's yours?
If it's stock it definately needs the exhaust 'removed' (to put it politely) and replaced with 3 inch and a straight thru muffler. The stock turbo outlet is clamped to the flattened down pipe and is only 2 1/4". The ATS piece is 3", then their 3 inch down pipe slides in. Only bad part is the cab needs to be clearanced out to fit the mandrel bent 3" down pipe. This takes some work with prybars and such to fold the cab seem back and out of the way. You should be able to call ATS and they will tell you who the nearest dealer is to you.
yeah its an automatic. its a 4 door w/ 8' bed. it runs ok except when i start it up sometimes it wants to die. and there is a little white smoke coming out of the tail pipe but it disappears when i step on the gas(diesel). also does any muffler shop carry a straight thru muffler or is it just pipe. and do you have to have one?
I have put on 3 inch glasspacks before, but there is a 3" resonator that I usually install. I forget the number at the moment, but I've bought them through Napa before. You can run a straight pipe but they do run a little loud, especially on decel (backrap).
Tarzan, you don't need a muffler, it is pretty mucha waste of money on a diesel. I run a 4" straight pipe all the way from my 3" turbo downpipe too the tip. The truck is not that loud and runs great. Mufflers build up heat and stifle the trucks. Get some good pipes and your truck will sing and be happy. Scotty
Trashing the stock exhaust is the cheapest thing you can do to get more power out of any of the Ford diesels. My 6.9 Natural aspirated drove like a new truck with 3" dual stacks no mufflers.
Yes it is loud, yes it sounds like a big rig with the jake on going down a hill when you gear down, but it goes up a hill a gear higher with the same load on just by changing exhaust system.
Next week I will tell you about a 7.3 IDI with the ATS turbo system that I am replacing the 6.9 NA with.
