Custom Shifters

Up to this point in time the choices we seem to have had for shifters ranged from OEM to trans-mounted floor shifters to column shifters. Back in the day Chrysler cars had push-button shifters but that was about it for "non-traditional" shifters. I remember looking through vendors booths at car shows at various electronic servo-controlled shifting devices that were controlled by a device mounted on the dash but these never seemed to have taken off...lack of reliability was a problem for them as I recall. Today I am seeing a number of vehicles that have addressed the issue of gear selection with some creative designs....push-buttons, dash mounted shift levers, rotating *****, etc.
Here's a question for all the uber-darksiders, have you ever seen one of these new OEM setups employed in a classic truck or car?

Is this for a 3 speed and will there be no 1st gear ? What would you use for the dial ? The availability of reasonably cheap electronic and electric actuators and switches make it possible for someone with a little ingenuity and allot of time to design things like this .

There are far more questions than answers at this stage. I have found some micro-actuators that are small enough to work and still have the push/pull power to move the shift arm. The feedback circuit will be a challenge but not insurmountable. The selector could be a round **** ala Chrysler 400 or pushbuttons or even a touch screen LCD panel. Was kinda looking for inputs from guys who have seen actual systems installed on non-production vehicles to get an idea of how others have solved the design challenge...I like working on this stuff but there's no sense in reinventing the wheel if I can avoid it.
