Unless mine really increases MPG after break in I'll be on the lower end. Driving home from the dealer between 55-60 MPH netted me around 15 MPG, I don't see any way 18 MPG on the regular is possible even if you are 100% dedicated to highway at 55-65 MPH and never once braking or stopping for a stop light/sign. Anyway I've provided my two cents and am done with the pissing match here, hopefully the OP doesn't buy a SD and think high teens is possible regularly, he's going to be disappointed. Low teens (maybe even 15?) should be expected and if more than that it's a bonus. Since the OP seems worried about MPG a SD probably isn't the best bet.

Dang guys lighten up. No one person has the only correct answer because we all drive a little different. I'm not buying either truck for mileage, but yes it matters. Thats the reason I asked to see what a number of people are seeing. If I need mileage or comfort I'll get in the Mustang, even at 479 horse and paying for premium it's the cheapest vehicle I own to drive! I don't need The SD over a 150 but as everyone else has done I'll decide when it comes time to order what I want. I know the SD won't be a mileage champ but I wanted a heads up one what to expect. Thank you for all input and lighten up. Jim

Tricky when you have a member ostensibly calling people liars over and over...

Good Luck with the decision.

What exactly were you expecting with your thread? Every MPG thread on this site ends in the same way. I'm sure the search function would have resulted in finding your answer too, as MPG is a fairly common topic. Good luck on whatever you decide to get.

Easy to search... Go to Performance, Engines and Troubleshooting section of the forum and look under the 7.3 engine topic. Three different MPG polls for this powerplant, lots of responses...

The real take away here is we are all passionate people. We love our trucks. Right or wrong, up or down. I may disagree with RidgewaySD on political stuff, but I listen to him on his towing and mileage. I actually respect him for sticking to his guns and wanting to go toe to toe on topics. Never met the man, but if I do I will buy him an adult beverage. I love getting into stuff with folks..... Always have, always will. Jim, welcome to this group. Welcome to a great group of people.

FWIW, here is my real world experience 22 F250 XLT CC SB 4x4 7.3L with 4.30 gearing.. TRIP 1 current tank today6/10/22 combined Interstate and city over the last couple days empty. TRIP 2 you'll notice is only 3 miles different from the odometer and doing my best to not accidentally reset it. TRIP 2 includes setting up the truck for our 10k 34ft 5th wheel including some pretty hard pulls on a nearby long hill, just had to hammer it to see what she'd do. All at an elevation of 1mile above sea level. TRIP 2 also includes our first trip with the 5th wheel to the lake 175 miles one way. It will get 14.2 maybe more empty at 75 mph 80 and it drops pretty good. Got around 8.5-9 mpgs on the trip to the lake.

I have had 3/4 ton 4wds since the 80s. I’m on the borderline of really needing a3/4 ton. A f150 with max tow, costs nearly the same as a F250/350. The F 150 will get better mpg when not towing, but I like the 6’ 8” box. Of the super duty. The shorter box that most 1/2 tons have would work very well for me. I’d rather have smaller cab 8’ box over a crew cab with a 5.5’ box any day.

I really don’t do much free way driving where I would actually burn a full tank of gas all on the highway. Most of my trips are mixed Highway, towing, and some mild off roading. I spend quite a bit of time on dirt forest roads, which is why a went with the tremor. Like I said earlier my truck is currently showing 12.9 mpg for the 25k that’s currently on it. The 2016 F250 with 6.2 got about the same mpg.

In the thread I posted my 50,000 mile average mpg of combined fillups, my average killer is long idles I do with my truck, my truck is my office on the job site.

16+! Is there something wrong with it? Another poster said 18 easily if driven conservative. There may be a problem.

4.30 gears... I have never seen an honest 18 mpg from mine but with 3.55 gears, full front valance and stock sized tires it is likely possible on the highway under 75 mph.

I did see 19.5 mpg Ridgway to Limon CO through the mountains. 300+ mile trip around 60-65 and several thousand feet of elevation drop.
