Not sure why any opinion other than "get it at the pump" is "wrong". The OP simply asked which is better. I think the question has been answered. If you tow all the time where DEF usage increases, put lots of miles on your truck, and ALWAYS fill up at the cheapest station, DEF at the pump makes perfect sense. However, if you drive fewer miles and your use pattern uses less DEF, then packaged DEF makes sense. Not complicated. An yes, the actual cost per mile of packaged DEF increases the cost marginally...that is a fact. Now I think I'll hook up the boat and go fishing where I pay $8.50 a gallon for non ethanol gas, which is another issue for another day.
Facts seem to be elusive to you. Not complicated at all. $4/gallon at the pump vs $8/galllon in the box is the same cost? That was the only thing I mentioned in that your math isn't remotely accurate. You can use your money as you wish. That was also not the point.
The point is and you even mentioned it that def at the pump is half the price, always fresher and creates zero waste.
Doesn't matter if you use 1 gallon or 100's of gallons the cost per gallon is the same.
No one that I recall ever said boxed def was bad. It's just ridiculously overpriced and creates more waste. It does have a shelf life and that can be an issue as well.
As far as def usage in the PSD's a programming change occurred in the 20+ year models where towing uses significantly more def than earlier year models. That makes this conversation even more meaningful and impactful as fuel costs continue to rise.

OK.....let me help you with the math. DEF in a package is $4 per gallon more than at the pump (that's $8 - $4 = $4). You go 1000 miles per gallon of DEF (less if towing). Therefore, 400 pennies more in package DEF divided by 1000 miles = 0.4 pennies per mile more. Hope that helps.

How you waste your money and justify it is your business. Fwiw I doubt anyone who has a 20+ year model PSD is getting anywhere close to that mpg with def. I'm certainly not. But we all use our trucks differently and costs add up over time.

Even now it's still cheaper at the pump. The last box of def I bought at TSC was $16 for 2.5 gallons. After tax that's almost $7/gallon. Last tank of def at the pumps was $4/gallon. Pretty easy math for me. Plus never have to worry about freshness of the boxes of def on the shelf or storing/hauling them around.
Filled my DEF tank yesterday for $4.09 a gallon. Best price out there around here. Plus I would hate to ruin my record of 2 years of not entering a Wally world (Literally).
