Electric fuel pump questions

Hey everyone I'm working on my 92, 7.3 idi NA, a few days ago I completely lost fuel pressure from my mechanical pump and decided to just block it off and go electric, and I see the facet duralift seems to be the popular pump of choice, but nobody in town could get 1 for a few days so I grabbed the edelbrock 17302 micro pump from oriellys since it says it's good for diesel fuel pump/ lift pump, well in the instructions it states that it must be within 1ft of fuel tank and is only to push fuel and not pull or it will damage it. ( I've always been under the impression that a lift pump was considered to draw fuel/ suction feed ) is that not how most people think of a lift pump vs fuel pump? And anyways if Install this 1 foot from my rear tank will it damage my tank selector valve by pushing fuel into it at 5-7psi? I needed my truck back on the road that day, which didnt happen anyways in hindsight should have ordered the facet pump that day since here in the driveway it still sits. Has anybody used a setup with a pump mounted near rear tank and pushed thro selector and any experience with the edelbrock diesel pump? I'm figuring just taking this back and getting the facet, is amazon prime the best bet on pricing? Thanks for all replies, also do you guys that use the duralift have the 11psi with a regulator or just run the 4-7 psi?

Traditionally, electric fuel pumps are designed to push fuel, not pull it. Whenever you read an article in Hot Rod, Car Craft, etc. about installing an electric fuel pump it states to install the pump as close to the tank as possible. I don't think you would damage the pump by mounting it behind the FSV. I've read on our site and other diesel sites that the Duralift is designed to move fuel without being close to the tank. I haven't switched from my mechanical pump yet but when I do I will buy a Dutralift.

If you don't want to wait on shipping for a Duralift then get a cheapie at the auto parts store. They usually carry a fuel pump the same design as the Edelbrock 17302 in a house brand. MAW save a few dollars.

Going to napa to pick up a facet posi flo pump for $65. They have 2 options 4-7psi the metal cube style or the regular plastic can style

The whole reason the duralift got it's name was because its durable, and will lift fuel! They are commonly used on reefer units where the have to pull the fuel all the way up from the bottom of the trailer.

If you have to have it going a cheap pump will do it, but I recommend you just replace the mechanical ($30 at Napa) if that's what you're after, order the duralift and install on the weekend.

duralift will pump fuel straight up 12 foot.
i have never seen a duralift pump die. we had one on a reffer box that was 36 years old when the box was scrapped, and i put it on a diesel roller with a 4B cummmins that lost it's mechanical pump...10 years ago and it is still working in the roller.

Ok, I got the duralift ordered , installed the posi flo so i could at least move the truck and it's supposed to be 4-7psi and I'm only getting 1-2 psi at the first port on the filter head.. anyways the duralift says 9-11psi, do you guys run a pressure regulator with those or just let it run? Most regulators I'm seeing under $60 have terrible reviews, hard to find a good 1 that can accurately regulate low pressures it seems, thanks alot for the help, and if I need a regulator it would be great to get a part # or link so I can have it ordered asap to get here with the pump.

The duralifts are the only viable option. I've used the cheapo pumps on my Jetta TDI, and they didn't last a few weeks. If they didn't work for a Jetta, then they have no hope in lasting in a Ford IDI.

Be careful when you buy your duralift. Sometimes you can find them cheaper, but counterfeit pumps are made somewhere else and apparently don't work properly. I got my first duralift from some guy who sold them on this forum years ago. Now he doesn't sell them anymore though.

schlimmbesserung ... I'll just stick with the old rebuildable Carter... works fine lasts long time

As long as you have positive pressure at the filter you're good to go from what I've read.

Many people here actually recommend the 9-11psi pump as it drops down enough going through the filter head. Even if it didn't I don't see any problems with running 15psi or below as that's common specs on various mechanical and mechanicalish pumps (think vp44 15+ is actually recommend) just know the more psi will cause the timing to advance from what I read. Not a big deal other than the fact you may have to retime the pump. However if you had something like 20-30psi it will cause failure of the ip shaft seals and leak diesel into the crankcase.

The only purpose of the lift pump on these rigs is to lift fuel and push it through the filter. The ip itself has its own built in fuel pump that delivers 90-110psi iirc to the plungers that do the actual pumping up to 2000+psi. As long as you don't end up with a suction on the pressure side in theory you are good to go, personally I'd prefer to see 3-4psi but according to the books it doesn't really matter.
