On my '85 F-150 (300-i6,EEC-IV), after I get it warmed it, when I am kinda lugging it in high gear or slowly accelorated, it wants to ping. My first thought was EGR. So I looked under the hood, and, alas, no egr valve. I haven't pulled any codes (since pretty much the last guy hacked everything up beyond belief), don't have a timing light (going to pick it up tonite from my folks), and don't want to rebuild the entire emissions system (it is a beater, and I don't have to pass emissions, and I'm not driving it a lot), I'm wondering if I slap a new EGR valve on and hook it up if that would solve the problem (going to check the timing b4 I mess with anything)?

btw, how many degrees is this thing supposed to be at? 10 degrees BTDC?

also, my factory temperature gauge isn't working. If I used the hole on the gooseneck where there is a sensor (thats no longer in use, suprise!) if that would provide an accurate reading?

sounds like timing yes 10 BTDC usually it's on the inside of the compartment under the hood next to the hood release/catch

I thought it said 10 BTDC but someone spray-painted over a good bit of it..

I did put a light on it, but I couldn't find a timing mark. I rotated the crank by hand, and still couldn't find anything. my 84 had a line going across the pulley. Any other way to find TDC on the balancer?

I would get under your truck with a very bright flashlight and a fine wire brush...sometimes they are covered in surface rusta nd it looks like nothing is there...if you still cannot find it try this:::

there is a way to manually find TDC...pull your #1 spark plug, then with a screwdirver or something similar (don't drop it in) feel around to see if you can find the piston; by hand turn the crank slowly until piston #1 is at the top of the cylinder....make your mark for future reference. I do believe that this is a rough way and would need fine tuning but it will get you started.

I'll try that. unfortionately, its my day off, and its pouring down the rain (as normal)
