So my 2018 f350 with around 600000km has developed an issue that when it goes up from 5th to 6th, or down from 4th to 3rd it has a clunk like someone slaps the transmission with a sledgehammer. Other than that it's working fine. Just did a full service on the transmission and the fluid seems fine, not smelling burnt or anything and very little shavings if any. Should i just buy a used low mileage one or is it worth getting it opened up and looked at. I highly doubt it's the solenoid, it does it randomly also. Not throwing any codes either.
If you are familiar with Forscan and don't mind a little wrenching I'd say change out the valve body. Forscan can program it. We have done several trucks with 250k mikes or more with similar issues and they were great afterwards.
Not that I know of, the trucks we did weren't throwing codes they just shifted really hard. The valve body comes with the solenoids and it's a fairly easy swap. Just one of those decisions that's hard to make with that many miles on it.
To be honest the only thing that is has begun to do it that clunk. It doesn't slip, doesn't search for the right gear, works great except for that clunk sometimes. And seems to do it more since i changed the fluid.
Well, 600000km is about 373000 miles. That is very respectable.
Before you dive into the transmission internals, you might want try try putting a little grease in your slip joint. This might just be the old Super Duty clunk that has been with these trucks all the way back in Gen1.
Just an update on this issue. I got a new valve body assembly put in and it shifts like new! I really appreciate everyones help on the problem. Thanks!!
