I have a 1996 full size van with a 4.9 and a automatic transmission. Randomly when I go to start it and I turn the key fuel pump comes on, check engine light comes on and I can crank it just fine but it won’t start. My only clue is that when this happens my fuel gage goes way past full. When this happens I know it won’t start but if I let it sit for a while and I try again it will crank and start and the fuel gage will read correctly.
when I turn the key forward one click to the accessory I can hear the fuel pump every time, and I can see the check engine light every time as well.
the only difference that I can see is the fuel gage. If it reads correctly then it will start. If it goes way past full then I know it won’t start.
any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Negative cable I know you said van but the negative cable to the fender connection was poor, in insulation, my posts are junk but its 1996 lol. also consider the other ground connections. also, PCM ground. no idea where van would be
I changed the ground from the battery, it was a home built cable and did look questionable. And it wasn’t attached in a very good way. It’s all new now with clean new ring terminals. Time will tell, I’ll start driving it more often now and I’ll look for more grounds to clean up & redue.
thanks for your help

np. On my truck there was a core support ground unlikely the same for you but it literally broke the bolt to remove it and clean it. crusty. fender off battery. crusty. post itself. crusty lol. So yeah good idea. Also is your alternator original?
I’m not sure if my alternator is original or not. It doesn’t look new. If it ever stops raining I’ll take the doghouse off and take a good look at the back of the engine and see if I can find another ground. If not I’ll crawl under and look around.
