Like many, I have struggled to remove the rear hub caps on the two F-450 DRW rigs ('19 & '22) I have owned. I tried several different methods on the '19; 2x4 & ratchet strap, slide hammer, etc. Most worked; sort of. I ended up buying an Ares Pry Bar that works well.
I was poking around the '22 the other day and found that Ford has included a plastic hubcap removal attachment in the lug wrench tool kit. Perhaps I missed it on the '19 or maybe this is something new. In any case, I tested it and the hub caps pop right off. Just put it on the end of the rod (for removing the spare from under the truck) and it levers the hub cap off.
I assume my 22 DRW F350 has one of those. I'd like to see how it works. Other than that I was planning on using a hockey stick, or any long piece of lumber to pry it off from the side of the hub cap as I've seen in a video.
I ordered indexable pry bars and they work great to remove the front and rear center caps. I keep a microfiber cloth in the case to use between the bar and surface to prevent scratching my wheels or cap.
First time (only time) I removed the rear caps on my F450, using the plastic tool, (and yes I was using it correctly) the tool broke and I had to pull them off w/ a slide hammer and attachment. What do I do if I'm on the road??
So I left them off, and painted the hubs chassis black
Thought I would share. Just had great success with this rubberized ladder hook from Harbor Freight. Best part of all, I can keep it in the truck full time for road side use if needed..
Long ago I was gifted a Craftsman screwdriver set from my dad. Came in a nice plastic box, had probably 20 or so different screwdrivers, including a 'bent' Philips and 'bent' straight screwdriver, intended to be able to turn screws that are buried inside something. I do not have a picture of either of them. They're about 6" long, and the offsets at each end are around 1"-1.25".
I occasionally used the Philips, but I NEVER used the straight...until I got my first SD with those hubcaps. I struggled and struggled with them, until I remembered I had that screwdriver. Grabbed it, walked back to the truck, slid it in the little slot on the hubcap, and popped it right off. That screwdriver lived in every Ford I owned after that, from F250s up to an F450.
Worked wonders, never had an issue getting the caps off, and put a useless tool to good use. Win-win.
