If all you've taken off of the hub is the outer allen bolts and adjustment dial, you still need to remove the snap ring that holds in the hub clutching components. It is a small thin one that is probably hidden by axle grease, so wipe it off and you'll probly be able to pop it out with a small screwdriver.
Then, after youve pulled the hub components out, you need a special tool to remove the wheel bearig adjustment nut. Once it's off the rotor and wheel bearings slide off the axle. Auto Zone sells the tool and their website shows you how to do this procedure. Login and go to repair instructions for your truck, category: drive train
Basically, just look up the procedure for replacing the front wheel bearings and you'll see what to do. Dont forget to go through the adjustment procedure for the bearings when you put everything back together.
Hope that helps
X2 there is a snap ring on the OUTER part, but inside of the hub. 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, truck, Bronco same same.
Use the hub screws as removal handles.
You need either of these sockets.
Outer nut off, washer with alot of holes off, inner nut off, hub-rotor off. Outer bearing will come with it. See the PIN on lower right? Come install time that HAS to be facing OUT and it is the 1st nut back on after the bearing and hub and rotor are back on.
Nice pictures and description Rich. I just did my 78 bronco. It was a pain, as the drivers side outer bearing was destroyed and wouldn't come off the spindle. I spent some time beating it off.
On the passenger side, the hub wouldn't come out after the snap ring was removed. I had to use the allen screws and then pry it out slowly.
Both rotors were cracked, pads were all destroyed/uneven and almost out of friction material. I upgraded to the t-bird calipers and F350 master cylinder.
I have felt your pain before. That is the outer bearings inner race, the cage and rollers are ground up metal. Using a thin cut off wheel I cut the race, the spindle was ok. Had to get a new hub...
Trick for spindle removal next time. Tighten, rubber mallet spindle, tighten, tap, tighten, tap....
After this point the pistons came OUT of the brake caliper.
