Not getting fuel

Good morning,

My truck WAS running until it sat for a year and a half or so as I worked on other things-brakes, brake lines, and suspension. Yesterday I tried to start it and it's turning over but not firing. So, I disconnected the fuel line to the carb, and it was bone dry. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

You can pull the line off the carb and try to prime the system up to that point, sometimes a dry pump has trouble getting primed if all the lines are dry. Also, kinda unlikely, If the needle is really stuck in the seat it could stop fuel from flowing, try pouring fuel down the carb vent to fill the bowls then tapping them to get them loose. Plus it should fire off that fuel in the bowl and should get the pump primed if it's still good. In my experience, I've found when they sit too long the fuel pumps seem to go bad. I've replaced more than one "new" fuel pump on my projects after they sat for 6+ months. I think the diaphragms crack or split because none of the ones I've replace produced any vacuum when i tested them. I've pretty much chalked it up to the cheaper materials not being fully compatible with the fuel blends that are now being used.

My guess is the fuel pump diaphragm dried up and likely cracked, but could be the sock in tank is clogged with rust, or maybe even there is no fuel in the tank, or a rubber line at the tank end is rotted off.

There is another short section of hose between the box and cab. Take the supply hose off the pump and place it in gas can, wrap a shop towel around an air blow nozzle and put a couple pounds of air in the fuel tank filler. At least it will show if you have fuel to pump. As above suggested fill bowl through the vent tubes. I use a turkey baster that disappeared from my wife kitchen.

Thanks for the info. I ordered a new fuel pump, but I also want to try what you suggested, but I don't know exactly where the "carb vents" are. "try pouring fuel down the carb vent to fill the bowls" Can you explain to me where those are exactly? Thanks. I'm not too worried about getting it running again-I don't thinks it a major issue--I hope. I did get a little gas out of the line when I disconnected the fuel pump and it had that bad gas smell. That's probably not good either....

What carb do you have? Should be a tube/opening like one of these. The first carb is a Ford 2V, so if yours is stock it'll probably look pretty similar to that.

Wow! Thanks so much! It looks like the first one. I can't wait to get a minute to get the new fuel pump installed and try priming it.

Speedfreak78--Thanks for the help. I got it running. After I posted this issue I got really sick with a bad cold, and was out for about a week. Since then I replaced the fuel pump then primed the carb as suggested and it started right up. I think I'll have it ready for a test drive this weekend!
