Morimoto XB LED Headlights
I installed a set of Morimoto LF505-ASM XB LED Headlights Ford Super Duty (11-16) (Pair / White DRL). This is a huge upgrade from the stock headlights and from the set of Recon headlights that I had installed. I cannot yet comment on durability or longevity but so far I am happy with the light output and the aesthetics of the Morimoto Headlights.
DRL Fuse Tap - The headlights use a fuse tap to power the C Shaped LED DRL's (Daytime Running Lights). The tap runs from the drivers side headlight to the fuse box under the hood. Another wire runs from the drivers side light across the radiator to connect to the passenger side light. The instructions indicate you should tap fuse #50 which Morimoto tells you is the "Mirrors" but on my truck #50 is for the blower. I tapped Fuse #49 which is the Rear Camera and the DRL's function properly. Morimoto provides the fuse tap so all you need to do is remove the fuse you are tapping and insert the tap in place of the original fuse. Make sure the wire is not pinched when you close the top of the fuse box.
DRL Forscan Programming - You will need to use Forscan to disable the DRL function in the trucks computer. If you do not disable the DRL function in the computer the low beams will come on and stay on whenever the truck is in gear. The lights will appear to function properly when you are in park and you test them but you will not be able to turn off the headlights when you are in gear, the light control **** in the truck is essentially disabled once the truck is in gear. Changing the setting is essential for the lights to operate properly and there is no other way to make this change without using Forscan or having the dealer change the settings in the computer. I won't go into how to make the change in Forscan in this thread because the Forscan process involves hardware, software, a windows laptop and a reference guide for the settings of your vehicle. You can google all of this information but be warned I had to purchase the Forscan OBD unit and software subscription to install the headlights.
Headlight Vertical Adjustment - You will need to use a phillips head screwdriver to set your low beams to the correct height so you are not blinding everyone! There is what looks like a gear you can see near the top of the back of each headlight that is accessible with the lights installed. Using a phillips head screwdriver you can adjust the headlight beams up or down. Turning clockwise lowers the beam and counterclockwise raises the beam. You can also adjust the horizontal but it is more difficult and requires remvoing the headlight or the wheel well guard, this was not necessary on my installation.
One warning in this whole process is DO NOT expect any help from Morimoto or Headlight Revolution. I purchased the headlights from Headlight Revolution and based on the customer service phone tree menu Morimoto and Headlight Revolution appear to be the same company. I tired to contact both companies via phone (left two voice mails after 20 minutes on hold each time), tried the online chat for a week (they are never online - no agent available) and sent an email to customer service explaining the problems I was having and asking for help. I have not received a single response from anyone in customer service at Morimoto or Headlight Revolution so be warned that if you decide to install their products you are 100% on your own to troubleshoot problems.
Prior to the Morimoto headlights I had installed a set of Recon headlights last year which are now in the garbage. The garbage is the only place Recon headlights belong and I might as well have taken $1K and burned it in my fireplace. I have not made many bad decisions customizing my truck but I will say two of the worst decisions I have made are:
- Doing business with Stage 3 Motorsports - possibly the single worst customer service experience I have ever had with any company in my entire life. I will never do business with them again...be warned!
- Buying Recon Headlights - total garbage - they essentially reuse stock incandescent bulbs for many of the functions and the headlights are CFL (not LED), only a small strip of decorative lights are LED. Regardless of the deceptive way they market these lights (buyer beware), the light output is terrible and almost immediately one of the CFL's failed. I can't say one good thing about Recon headlights, customer service, warranty etc.
ALL of the following aftermarket automotive headlight vendors identified by the brands and icons shown in the screen shot below... are the same company.
