2003 Explorer 4.6 - OD Light flash and codes
2003 Explorer 4.6 - OD Light flash and codes
In addition, i had a Restraint control module code for impact sensor failed I believe. The airbag telltale is lit, not concerned about it till after the rest is good.
Skip downward for the code stuff, here is some background on the vehicle:
--------So this truck is decent looking for its age and wear. I suspect over 200k miles but I dont have the actual mileage since I forgot to look and it was not on that display at that time. The truck has the 4x4 auto system with the 3 buttons on the dash. The thing burns or leaks oil and coolant to unknown amounts. The oil cap doesnt seal to the valve cover, because something appears broke or missing. I was going to fix that before investigating the oil further because it appears at least some oil is leaving that way.
---------Appears to have OEM coils no idea about plugs. last 4.6 I took the coils out for the plugs I lost like 5 or 4 of 8 and I still own the original, good 4 or so left over. I will not pull these unless its time to investigate plugs for tune up purposes lol. Same story with injectors. does anyone know if a marquis 2001 would have the same coil/injectors of 2003 explorer? lol.
-------------the truck DOES NOT Have a dipstick for the transmission because **** me with a pinecone I guess. I will have to do the check under sadly. What transmission is this vehicle have? 4r75w?
===================================
Then the codes:
I was using live data, when the OD flashing was happening, Pressure solenoid A or something said SHRT PWR so i assume short to power. The truck, reportedly , seems to guzzle gas when it was, so I assume it was in 3rd gear and would not let into OD. I assume this is because it cant modulate pressure precisely enough to avoid wearing out the TCC?
further:
Without knowing this fluid condition or level, but knowing it drives fine for the most part otherwise, I dont think its worn out or low because shortly before problem I have drove it and the only issue I could find was under WOT going from 2nd to 3rd or maybe it was 1st to 2nd, it was a little choppy on the end of the shift. However, the engine runs slightly rough, likely due to small vac leaks (oil fill, hoses) and tune up/dirty throttle stuff. I attributed this choppy to the engine driveability but I only drove it for 40 minutes and it was a rainy day. What do you all think may be at play for the transmission? The OD light does not appear to flash a code like an older ford, but that pressure solenoid makes me think its under the pan and hopefully the solenoids are accessible without tearing down transmission? If it is, I will just plan on doing a fluid, filter, check the level , and then hopefully reusable gasket on pan and hopefully The solenoid is cheap or not hard to do? Parts recommendations?
note: I have not verified the wiring on the outside of the trans yet but I assume the problem is internal?
=================
about the transponder, the truck always starts. No information I can give other than No fob is in use, I have not found the code for the keypad yet(didnt have time), and the door doesnt have a central lock/unlock from the keyhole. The gate in the switch on the column looks rough, and the steering lock/BTSI functionality are strange or bind sometimes. I dont know if it was attempted stolen, but it still starts normally and has no trouble turning etc. Advice on this?
And the only remainign codes are for a communication code that the tool said SCP stuff, for engien coolant. I also had a self-test range for cylinder head temp sensor. But, I played with the wiring coming from under the intake, and reseated the connector, and I Did see live data that seemed rationale but have not retested the KO, engine off/on tests so I dont know if it would come back. Either of them. I assume they are related but im not sure. Advice?
note: coolant WAS low when I started looking at truck, I filled the reservoir to the right area, but have not bled or found out if it needed bleeding. I wasnt sure how low it was based on the dirty reservoir. '
No leaks are known and are hard to check without getting some clean things to park on to check for it
