2002 explorer o\d light flickers

My buddies mom just bought a 2002 explorer. its been running fine but now the Overdrive light just flickers and wont go on or off. I makes the tranny shift really hard. It doesnt do it in any paticular gear just when ever. Any body had this prob any advice would be helpful. It still goes in to over drive just shifts hard. its a 4wd model i think its the 4.6 (not positive). thanks

Get it checked out. That's a pretty pricey piece of the rig to ignore.

If there is a code, that's a step towards a solution.

not sure how you check the codes. was wondering if it was just the sensor or switch on the tranny or if may be it was low on fluid checked it seemed like it was full

The flashing O/D light is an indication that the computer has set a DTC code. You need a code reader to check the codes. When the tranny has set a code, it goes into a "fail safe" mode, and that is what is causing the hard shifts. Take it to your local Autozone and they will check the code for you.
