Just picked up a 06 Explorer for my daughter. The 04 f150 she's currently driving is horrible on gas for an 18 year old so we figured the 4.0 should be a little better.
Picked this one up for a song but it needs work. Going to pull the motor and have a buddy do the timing set... It runs but the front chain smacked a hole in the driver's side cam cover.
Good looking 2006 Explorer!
Let us know what TimingComponents get replaced & what brand used (MotorCraft, Cloyes, Melling...)

Good to see more ladies working on their vehicles, gives me inspiration! But, don't be surprised if your gas mileage doesn't improve by much, the 5 liter and 4 liter are similar for mileage. Did you take training for mechanics or is it simply experience! I'm a senior gal learning what I can DIY on my 98 XLT. Good job on yours!

That's my wife and daughter... Lots of experience mainly. Youtube videos can teach you anything. The 5.4 in my daughter truck gets about 13 or 14 combined. Still better than my Raptor or the 390 in the 66, but the kid can't afford poor mileage like I can... This explorer should get at least a few more mpgs. If not, we can flip it.
Ordered the full timing kit and gaskets today. Went with Cloyes and felpro. Should be here tomorrow.
Gaskets came in today. Timing set got stuck in salt lake. Should be here tomorrow. Was planning to drop off the motor at my buddy's shop for him to do the timing set but now he wants to do it at my place so we're planning to offload it back into my shop later today.
My buddy made it over last night. We started tear down and decided to go ahead and pull the heads. His machine shop in town can get a valve job done with the new seals included in the gasket set installed this morning for a few hundred bucks. Might as well...
The daughter and I are headed to a junk yard this morning to find a cam cover and possibly an intake manifold.
The daughter and I went to the junk yard and found an intake manifold without a broken pcv nipple and driver side cam cover. Even got the throttle body all for $35.
Heads won't be done until Monday so have some time to clean parts.
More teardown today. My back is out again so the girls helped my buddy. Decided to order a high volume oil pump after seeing all the guide chunks in the oil pan and pickup.
Started the timing install yesterday. My buddy is coming back tonight to help finish putting on heads, rear timing set, new HV Melling oil pump, then rear main, etc.
we also spent a lot of time steam cleaning the interior. Took out the back seat and cleaned the carpet and surroundings. Still have the front seats to do. It was GROSS...
