Working my way through some issues on my newly acquired ‘78 f150 6 cyl 2wd. Truck is in great shape but there’s about 5” of left to right play in the shifter. It makes driving pretty tough. Finding gear is just tough with so much play. I pulled the boot off to see if there were any bushings or something along those lines but the shifter shaft seems to go directly into the transmission. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions thank you in advance!
Really appreciate all the help! It appears I have a t18. Is there a write up anywhere that you know if that walks you through rebuilding the shifter components? Do I have to drop the tranny to do so?
If you can't fix this by the above methods with the stick and it's pins, spring etc, then you can pull your carpet back and get to the access panel in the floor of the cab. You can pull that panel and remove the top of the transmission if need be.
There are posts and videos etc on that as well if you get to that point.
