This weekend I did a rear diff fluid change on my truck. With a breaker bar I was able to remove the fill plug on the cover. Then removed the drain bolt, and allowed the old fluid to flow out. Took about 40 minutes to drain, to a VERY slow drip (I grabbed lunch to pass the time). I then put thread sealant on the drain plug and reinstalled it. I had bought 4 quarts (manual calls for 3.61) of Valvoline which comes in 1 quart bags which actually were much easier to work with than the traditional plastic bottles as you simply hold the cap up tight to the fill hole and collapse the bag to empty it.
One item, is that I expected with about half a quart left, the fluid to flow back out the fill hole once the correct level was reached. However it tool all 4 quarts, minus what was left in the bags (which was not much) and never reached hte level of the fill hole. It appears the fill hole is not set at the correct height to use as a 'fill to' indicator. I don't suspect the extra 10% will hurt anything, but thought I post to see if others has seen the same issue.
Hmm, when I changed the rear differential fluid on my M275 I kept filling until fluid came out the fill hole. I have no idea how much it took. I'm guessing the amount wasn't far off from spec, otherwise I likely would have posted a similar question.
I didn't measure the quantity I put back in either. I filled until it came out, front and rear. My Sterling is a little less capacity, I had 7 qts, I have half a qt left.
I would think if you got 4 qts in there on a 3.6 qt spec you should be fine. The real measurement might be if you can touch the oil with your finger in that hole, not if it is pouring back out. I have filled mine until spilling out for years but, if your pinky touches oil, you are good. I seriously doubt it is underfilled.
There was a whole thread recently that talked about the level not being the same as in the olden days, lol
In that thread it was conclusively established (per the service manual IIRC) that the proper fill on the M275 is 10mm - 15mm below the fill hole. That is probably at least half a quart below the hole.
