1990 F150 maintenance work

1990 F150 XLT Lariat Long Bed 351W E4OD
Going to try and keep a solid thread going here so I can ask questions about powertrain moving forward.
I use my truck to move some trade show stuff around the country and it needed some serious love. I am not the first owner and had not opened up any of the countless issues I knew of when I bought the truck. I knew I needed to start with the mechanicals, as the motor and trans were fully functional, smooth, and solid (for now). I was running on one gas tank, and when making the decision to alleviate this obvious issue, I knew that "it was time".

Here is the truck with the bed removed and parked in the shop.

Here is a sampling of some of the parts I needed to install. This doesn't show the original reason for the work, the new fuel pumps. But as long as the bed was off...

Started by removing everything I could, withing reason. I decided to remove rust from everywhere I could reach with a wire wheel as I moved down the frame. I went ahead and put 2 inch drop shackles on the rear. Notice the gas tanks removed (sort of). I actually had purchased helper springs randomly online before looking, and was pleasantly surprised to find a decent set already installed that were larger than the ones I returned. I was able to return mine and spend the money elsewhere thanks to the farmer who owned this before me.

All new tie rods. For anyone who doesn't know, keep your old stuff for a minute so you can take measurements. Getting down the road to the alignment shop will be a lot more comfortable.

Found a rust patch on the inside front clip (not sure what this area is actually called). I cut out the weak metal and cleaned the area.

I cut a corner out of a sturdy control box I had in the junk pile. I learned long ago that it isn't hoarding if your stuff is cool and you use it.

After cutting slots and holes where needed, I tack welded the "bracket" and sprayed with etching primer. This isn't a structural area, so this rat rod mod will be just fine.

New brakes, bearing, calipers, lines, shocks, and I found wheel wells that were in way better shape at the upull. Rattle can where I could reach the frame with wire wheel and spray can. I also rewrapped the wire harness while it was exposed. New ball joints as well!

New rear ere'ting.

Had no choice on the stuck rear brakelines breaking, so I replaced those. In hindsight I should have done all of the brake lines at once, but here we are in the future. I changed the diff fluid, and put on new shocks.

Effing rust removal. I WILL go with the sandblaster next time I do this.

Yes, those are 2" spacers on the rear.

And we're functional again!
Went ahead and painted the gas tanks red while they were out and clean (because why not). I found this awesome reflective insulation stuff to use in the tank strapping. Two new fuel pumps with sending units. Had to rewire the rear, as the replacement came with a different connector. Cleaned the fillers. Don't talk to me yet about the exhaust...holy hell why do people do this. Straps will always be better than the popcorn your cousin leaves all over the exhaust with his awesome skills.

Going to keep uploading, stay tuned to the rattle can rebuild show, lol. Really though, the idea is to do the best I can with the resources and money I have on hand. This is an actual working vehicle and I have to really control my desire to do the top shelf restomod I dream of.

Okay, back at it with the white truck. The rain here in the south has kept things busy.

I have some decisions to make regarding paint and body, that I don't want to bother with until I take a stab at the powertrain first. This has all been to make the truck safe and usable again, and a stopgap for future decisions. Hence the following choice to just scrape some rust off the bottom of the bed, rattlecan some spots with rust primer, and reattach. I did put plenty of anti-seize and used stainless carriage bolts.

Got an alignment and some new rubber. I run almost strictly highway, so I bought XL street tires, standard size. I'll deal with the wheels soon enough.

Now some smaller stuff.
I put in new power window motors, lined the doors with insulation, and reattached the panels including a donor from the u-pull (it is the darker blue, but it has all its parts).

I also traced the infamous wiper issue. I changed the switch, I fiddled with the relay black box thing...and then pulled the motor and it was rusted shut, lol. The magnets broke out just getting it apart.
So new wiper motor, and blades make going down the road in this southern rain a GO!
