P0407 Can't Diagnose
Late 2004 Excursion 6.0 with extensive work completed. 188,000 when I got it, 228,000 on it now.
BPD oil cooler relocate, EGR cooler
FICMrepair FICM and PCM Atlas40 and "upgraded" to best internals per Ed
Leece/Neville Alternator and wiring upgrade
New VGT solenoid, unison ring, etc
New HPOP, IPR
New OE injectors, dummy plugs, nipple cups and seals, standpipes, vc gaskets, numerous other sensors, all FoMoCo, some more than once.
I'm sure there is more, just ask.
Bought it with a full page of codes, using AE software repaired all but 1.
Prior to FICMrepair, I had 2 issues that were egr related, P0407 & P0488. I can't find the procedure I used to test, but it was a pdf of a Ford Manual with diagnostic procedures for dtc's. It led me to suspect the PCM and sent it off to Ed at FICMrepair and was confirmed to be a bad PCM internally. I was doing an Atlas40 FICM Tune anyway, so I had them source a good PCM and both programmed to this tune. While it fixed the P0488 code, the P0407 remained, but presented no drivability concerns. I thought maybe it was AE software pulling a "phantom" code or something since the truck ran so nice after the tune.
Took the family to Wisconsin from Tennessee and back in January. On the way home, truck started slowly dying on interstate at speed and eventually cut out. Pulled over, restarted, was able to limp off interstate to diagnose. Can't remember the exact code, but it was for a EBP sensor, replaced with new from Ford dealer in whatever town we were in and made it home no problem.
Last week, pulling into a parking space, the truck started to buck, surge, bog, run like garbage. Shut if off, 4 hours later restarted, still a little buck and bog at idle, but went away when I gave it throttle. Made it home, but was very rough when idling. IPR and ICP were erratic. Both newer and I removed the IPR to check for debris and it was clean. AE snapshot is below. No idea where the airbag or glow plug codes came from, but P2287 was curious. That is a new part, less than 2 years ago. I cleared the codes, and curiously, only the P0407 is present. I'm getting tired of this truck. No matter how much time or money you throw at them, seems they will never be dependable.
So here's what I don't understand. How does the EGR valve even work? I see things about Vref wires and a throttle position sensor I don't have. I can operate the egr with AE and can hear a change in the sound of the truck, so I can command it to do whatever, but when monitoring it during use, it never moves from 0%. I have traced the wiring as much as possible, rewrapped the harness, replaced the pigtail, but I can't get rid of this code. Is this the reason for the random running like crap? There are times it runs smooth, peppy, and wonderful. Then just randomly it will start acting like a dog, down on power, louder, clunky feeling...the opposite of peppy and smooth.
Trying not to write a book here, so if there's more info needed, I can get it and will reply. Any help is appreciated.
