So my truck was vandalized. I’m trying to get it back to normal but need some help with wiring under the steering column. I can start the truck by bridging the starter solenoid with a screwdriver with the ignition switch is in power position.
Some other things happening are RPM gage not working, alternator voltage gage not moving. The truck starts and runs fine and drives. It’s a 1997 f350 5-speed.
I just need some help knowing where these plugs pictured below go. Thanks a lot for any info and pointers where these go or how to trouble shoot this issue.
Agreed. The ignition key cylinder is damaged as well so waiting for a new one. But it won’t even start using the ignition switch which it should and I started it before that way a while back.
Green/white/black goes no where on mine. Empty plug
Late 95 build for 1996MY. Five speed.
Are you pressing the clutch in when trying to crank it via the ignition switch? You have to verify the NSS circuit is closed. It could have been damaged during the theft. Mine is bypassed, I think it was pins 1 and 3.
Pressing the clutch makes no difference. Looks like my wait to start indicator light is also not working and the lights next to it that usually light up don’t. Once again I can start the truck by bringing the solenoid on the fender. Any idea where the other plug should go with the yellow with green stripe, red with tan stripe and tan with white stripe goes?
Is that a new ignition switch or the OE unit? I have had issues with aftermarket units in the past, all positions did not seem to function.
Try jumping just the small pin at the solenoid to 12V to make sure that works. The small pin is what closes the relay (solenoid) to send power to the starter. Probably fine, but if not grounded it will not close.
Checked for popped fuses yet? I think fuse 22 is for the WTS deal under hood or 17 inside.
OE unit. I can use it to turn the truck off which tells me the switch should be ok. All fuses look good. I guess will need to go one by one and start checking if anything is loose. Still trying to figure out where that other plug goes since I don’t see anything to attach it to.
Ok got it to work. Thanks for the pointers. Fuse #17 looked ok and tested ok but I just decided to swap it and it all works now. But it does not always start using the ignition switch it’s a hit or miss on they one. Maybe when I will put the new steering column in since this one is trash it will fix it.
still trying to figure out where that other plug goes.
When I did my transmission conversion I learned these trucks are wired for both manual and auto. All wires for every option are under the dash, whether you have the options or not. Since you have a manual, one of those connecters may be for the auto nuetral switch. The first one you are holding may be for cruise control. If you do not have cruise on your truck, that may be why it is not plugged in If you do not have power seats, that may also be another. In short all connectors for all options are under there whether you have the option or not. Do not fret over it as all trucks are going to have some unused connections because you can not have a manual and an auto in the same truck. It has been 17yrs since I did my conversion so I may not be correct on which connector goes where so I will not pretend I do. Good luck and I hope I answered a few of your questions.
