2015 F-150 - Engine Temp Fluctuating

Last week I received the "Engine Coolant Temperature" error on my way to work, did some research and it seemed to be the thermostat, so I took it to a local shop. They agreed on that diagnosis, replaced the thermostat and it seemed to be fixed. The following day I noticed when I was going about 60 MPH the temp gauge would climb almost all the way to high and when I slowed down it went back to where it should be. The engine was hot too, I could feel the heat through the vents. I took it back, they said it was possible there was just air bubbles and bled the coolant system again. Unfortunately, the issue is still happening, anytime I go over 50-55 MPH the temp goes up almost all the way if I keep that speed. Any idea what might be the cause of this?

Aftermarket thermostat - Do not use!

If they used a aftermarket thermostat get it out of there and put in the OEM Motorcraft thermostat. I literally just went through this on my 2015 ecoboost. I replaced the waterpump and did the thermostat at the same time. Everything was fine ( or so I thought) until the next day climbing a hill going to work the coolant temp Guage hit 228 and climbed to 235. Played around with it and decided I had a defective thermostat. Stopped at NAPA and picked another one up and swapped. Thought I had it solved as the numbers wouldn't pop up above the guage. A week later on a long trip started climbing a really good hill and boom 228 and climbed like crazy. Dropped to 5th and temp dropped right back down. Got myself a scanner and monitored temp. Glad I did as on flat ground/in town empty temp was running 215 to 220. Installed OEM thermostat last night and climbing the hill to work 198 was highest temp...in town 190. Both aftermarket thermostats were Motorrad from different parts stores. I wonder how many trucks out there are running hot and don't even know it?

Thermostats on 5L are special to the system design.
it's located off the engine in a Y tube as a reverse flow that needs the special Ford Thermostat design.
Compare the Ford Thermo and an aftermarket and see the difference.
Good luck.

Ford has redesigned the thermostat and completely solved the issue. Go to dealership and get the thermostat changed along with a complete flush of the syatem. Also remove engine cover, put in new spark plugs change radiator reservoir cap and use Motorcraft air filter.

It will be completely solved.

Only use Motorcraft parts!
