Now I know this has been posted quite a few times in this forum, but this issue might be specific so I’ll explain my problem in detail and hopefully some of you refined enthusiasts can guide me the correct way to sort this out.
Basics are, 1996 F250 7.3 powerstroke, Dana 60 in the front, E40D trans, 264K on the clock
so I had a brand new transmission installed by a shop. Truck came in and starter/ignition all worked fine. Truck came out of the shop with working trans and non working key/ignition.
installed new cylinder, and solenoid. Still the key does not want to crank the engine. Jumping the solenoid works fine, but key has to be in on position. I was reading that maybe the ignition switch under the steering column would be next solution to chase, but I’m wondering what else it could be before I just keep throwing parts at this beast. Thanks for your help fellas!
Just a thought when swapping a zf5 in my truck, before re wiring the harness, I had to remove the electric gear selector off the e 4od and zip tie it in either the park or nuetral position to get my truck to start. Just my only thoughts on a transmission job being related to ignition key
Sounds like MLPS or manual linkage misadjusted. Will it start in neutral?
I would disconnect lever/rod at MLPS. Keep truck off, e-brake set, wheels chocked, pop it into reverse and verify those two lights illuminate. If not, I would adjust the MLPS as needed.

There is probably a seal behind the MLPS as it attaches to manual linkage inside the case, so it would need to be removed to R&R this seal as well as to clean the case during a reman. I still bet that is misadjusted. If not, see if your shifter bushings are junk.
The 4R100 in my Expedition would sometimes not start in P, always did in N. Push up on the shift lever, would start. Installed fresh bushings, no problems since.
