The other day I accidental put the shifter in "2" position. I drove maybe a half mile under 25mpg (speed limit in our town). I didn't notice anything weird or that I was even in "2" until coming to a stop on an incline. I push on the gas and the vehicle was sluggish but making noise like it was going somewhere (which it was slowly). I wouldn't say it was slipping but more or it started in second gear instead of first.
I tested this same stop/incline in "D" and the truck will push you back into your seat. This is the same with "1" position. But "2" doesn't doesn't have push back just kinda a slow acceleration.
Does putting the selector in "2" make the transmission start in second gear? I always had them that ran first and second in the "2" position. I have no code in Forscan to report. So is this my truck telling me that something is going out? The truck runs fine in "D" and I never felt like I had an issue until now. Thanks to all those that helped.
Position 2 starts in second and it feels sluggish because you need to apply more RPM in order to multiply the engine's torque (and generate a lot of heat) to overcome the taller gear from a dead stop.
Yeah I understand the concept, just was under the impression for my 20 odd years of being a backyard mechanic that position "2" would run thru first and second but stop there. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

GM transmissions will do that, but Ford's standard is second gear only when in the 2 position.
