What engine do you have 2 valve or 3 valve? What year model is the vehicle so we can help you figure out which version you have. Spark plugs and procedures are different.
is it true what they say about the plugs braking off when trying to replace them?
That is the 3 valve engine. You have the 2 valve non PI(performance improved head) The 99 and early run 2000 V10 had very few plug threads and are highly prone to spitting them out. Especially if not torqued correctly.
No, the plugs that you need are the Motorcraft SP-479 and they have plenty of threads on them, it’s your cylinder heads that are short on threads. That’s why it’s so important to torque the new plugs to 25/27 ft/lbs to prevent them from working loose and blowing out, the factory spec was only 11/17 ft/lbs which seems to be a bit low with those few threads.
Whenever you replace spark plugs you should also replace the rubber boots and springs that connect then to the Coil On Plug (COP), for those the Denso (the OEM manufacturer) has the set of ten in their 671-0001 kit. If you need a new COP or two the Denso 673-6000 is the actual OEM unit for about half the Motorcraft cost.
