I hope someone can help me on this. I have a 78 F 150 4x4 with a 351m in it . The rear main seal is gushing oil and I need to replace it. Whats it take to do this with the motor in the truck? Is it a one or a two piece seal and is there any tips, tricks or tools that I need to get the old one out and the new one in . Thanks in advance!
First of all are you sure it's the rear main seal? These engines are famous for having the oil pressure sending unit leak and send a lot of oil down the back of the block making it look like a rear main.
Last time someone posted on this forum that he was absolutely positive it was the rear main seal leaking he ended up replacing the seal and oil pan gasket, then he fixed the problem by replacing the o.p. sending unit.

Bill,
Thanks for the quick response. I had no idea that the sending unit was capable of a problem like that. I sure hope thats it. I'll take a very close look tomorrow and find out. Laying under the truck for several hours changeing the seal is not my idea of fun!
