my 91 F-250- 5.0-- 4X4 needs the rear main seal replaced. Is there any way around removing the tranny. Years ago you could get a 2 piece seal. When I bought the seal, it was one piece. They didn't know what I was talking about.
Pull the motor??? Are you sure it's the rear seal? My oil pan gasket was leaking in that area and I thought it was the same thing. After replacing the the gasket, leak stopped.
How many miles on the motor?
I spent a weekend putting a hole new pan in, thinking that was the problem. when I got done I still had a leak. It was much less, the pan was deff. leaking. Now I'm getting oil from were that thin plate mounts to the tranny. I has 170,000 miles. The tranny (E4OD) is slipping also. The rest of the truck is great. New ball joints, radiator, rear gas tank, wiper motor. Window motors. tons of stuff is new. I've had it about 3 years. I'm thinking of doing a hole motor and tranny swap. These trucks aren't worth anything anymore. I only paid $1500. I only drive it about 3000 miles a year. I know I can nurse the tranny for another year if I need to. One side of me says spend the money. The other says get rid of it.
If that seal is about 3 1/2" to 4" in dia. thats the right seal. it is actually easier to do than the two piece seals of the old days. you might try a junkyard swap on your tranny, who knows you might find a good low mileage one.
