Hi everyone, two weeks ago I had a check engine light codes P20BA (def heater) and P0401 (EGR cooler Insufficient flow). I replaced the def heater and a couple of days later the check engine light went out for about a week and a half. Now the P0401 code is back. So I assume that a I have to replace the EGR cooler? Also will the P0401 code cause the truck to start the shut down process?

Hey good morning.
What year truck and how many miles? Prior problems at all? More info will help others give suggestions.
Based on my experience, sporadic P0401 is the early stages of the EGR cooler plugging issue. Active P0401 will cause engine derate but with the two months I had the issue, it didn't cause a shutdown condition. Normal daily driving you won't notice the derate much but put it to work and it has an obvious lack of power, especially when you reach a hill. However, the truck wasn't healthy and didn't sound normal, best to just resolve the issue as soon as you can get parts.
205k miles is a good run if this is the original cooler. Unfortunately, it's an unlisted maintenance item just with various mileage results.
As for as i know it's the original cooler. I'm the third owner, my Dad being the 2nd. He bought it at 124000 miles.
My EGR cooler clogged at 58,000 miles (and 61 months). I had a lot of short trips unloaded during those miles so I was not all that surprised. I was able to get it covered under the 8/80 emissions warranty. If I remember correctly the bill would have been around $2,000.
