I have a table I found when searching other sites. It lists an air bag code 51 as "Diagnostic monitor internal thermal fuse Blown and short to ground no longer exists (short to ground was repaired or is intermittent" I have a '92 Aerostar 3.0L 2WD A/C PS AutoTrans Hope this helps
I have this, too. It basically means that the power was cut to the airbag, but now it's back I think.
Has anyone been monkeying around with wiring in your van lately (like putting a stereo in) and perhaps inadvertently disconnected and reconnected the airbag? That's what happened with mine.
I would like to know if this code means the Airbag is inoperable. If so, I'd be glad - my wife is 5' and I don't think I want the airbag deploying while she is driving. If I get brave enough I may have a go at disconnecting the battery for 1/2 an hour and REALLY remove the airbag. Most shops around my area (Except Ford, who'll charge me an arm and a leg) won't touch this.
Although I'm not sure, but it seems to me that if the "internal thermal fuse" of the "diagnostic monitor" is "blown" this means that the system is inoperative and has not been fixed. Apparently there was a short to ground that caused the internal fuse to blow.
I'd recommend taking it to a professional to have it checked out. This is not something we DIY'ers can play with unless you're very familiar with the safety factors involved in working on the air bag system
