Everything was fine until it wasnt

84 300 with a C4 maybe C5 (door tag says C5).
I’ve been driving the truck around a lot today. I went to park it to pick up my son and the engine dieseled when it shut off for a second.

i go to restart it and the engine was stumbling like crazy. Felt like it was gonna stall. When on the throttle it’s fine but the transmission wouldn’t go into third gear at all.

what should I look for first? Checking trans fluid first I guess but you do that in park with engine running right?

Transmission fluid level appears to be fine

Pulling the coolant temp probe near thermostat allows the truck to idle but high. If I plug in the probe the idle comes down to normal level but will eventually stumble and die

Drove it around my neighborhood with coolant temp probe unplugged and it drove better but wouldn’t shift into 3rd. Almost like 3rd was slipping. Drove better in 2nd actually.

coolant temp probe (3 wire) was replaced previously.

normally I don’t have any issues with this truck but it’s rarely used at all.

Vacuum hose to vacuum Modulator on transmission was dangling. Musta blew off when it dieseled on me that time. It’s just push fit onto the vacuum “tee” but it’ll get a hose clamp now.

Wire ties work well also when you need just a little bit to keep a vacuum line in place.
