Mechanical fuel pump failure?

Mechanical fuel pump failure?
1985 Supercab, 351W HO. Edelbrock carb, DUI distributor and no emissions.
Quick question, do these fail gradually? Or is it a works/doesn't work thing?
It seems to me that my pump is intermittently not doing its job. At first, I wasn't getting good fuel flow from the rear tank but I blamed it on the sending unit, maybe fuel lines, unsure. Lately seems like it is taking longer and longer to fill the carb bowl after it sits. Finally, yesterday I can't get it to start. I have a clear fuel filter in front of the carb, and even after 30 seconds of cranking it is only partially full of fuel, and not enough to fill the fuel lines.
I've ordered a replacement, figuring it could use a new pump regardless. I hope it's not too much of a pain to get it in. Any tips would be welcome!
Thanks,
John

The fuel pumps usually work or they don't. If you have a truck that has sat around alot, and then suddenly put it back on the road, they can usually fail then, since the old fuel has attacked the rubber diaphragm in the pump.
I would blow through the lines going back to the tank(s) when you have the fuel pump off to make sure they are clear.
