I have a 86 f150 4x4 4spd. I am having an 302 engine built that will have gt40p heads. Does anyone know if I can use the factory manifolds? If not does anyone know which headers will work with the heads and the 4spd. I’ve heard the clutch’s slave cylinder can get in the way of some headers.
Any SBF headers will bolt to GT40P heads, it's the spark plug angle that is the issue with them. There were a couple companies that made Foxbody headers specifically for the GT40P heads, but I think they have been out of a production for quite a while now. You can run shorty headers and they will not interfere with your transmission at all...you'll just have to run your duals down the passenger side (lots of people do this).
I'm not an expert on the P heads, but from what I've read, most guys that run them use whatever headers they can get to work with the transmission, and just deal with the spark plug angle issue. You might want to read up on it, but it basically means buying new plug wires every year or so because a couple of them will burn the ends off being so close to the exhaust.
Like anything else, YMMV. A half a dozen guys will say that they couldn't get foxbody headers to fit in a Bullnose, and then one guy will come along and say they fit just fine. I went with GT40 heads on my last 302, and my current build has stock E7 heads, so I have avoided the P head issue. They are great heads though, some people say they're the best SBF factory heads ever made.
Thank You! I have had gt40p heads in a mustang before so I know which headers I can make work with them I was really just unsure about which ones would fit with the truck. I had just heard/read stories of the 4spd being hard to work around. The truck already has dual exhaust going back on passenger side so if the shorty headers will work I will just have to get my exhaust fitted to them.
Someone’s actually building the motor for me. Roller block new cam pistons pretty much everything new except he already has a set of gt40p heads that have already been to the machine shop that he is gonna use. So I am just trying to figure out what I can use that won’t interfere with the clutch stuff on the trans and will work with the spark plugs on those heads. I can probably get a hold of some explorer manifolds from the JY if that’s the best option. Just didn’t know if they would fit the truck.

Not sure they will. The explorer has a pretty tight engine compartment though.

Hi Gorebs9589. I am looking to make this exact change to my 86 as well. How did you make out with your exhaust and those GT40P heads in your 86'?
So I ordered some headers from summit. SUM-G9035 is the item number. They fit the truck perfect and work with the gt40p heads. #7 does touch but I’m gonna dent it just a bit to clear the boot. It won’t take much and for less than $200 I was happy with this result. Hope this helps someone in the future. Driver side Passenger side.
