6.2L Camshaft postion sensor errors

Hey gang, been a while since I have been here, but I wanted to let you know of a problem that I fought with for almost 6 months.

Regardless of what I did, I kept getting the dreaded camshaft postion errors, both banks and both codes. 341, 390 and 394. I do not remember what the other one was, but all related to banks a and b. I replaced both sensors (Ford engineers needs a good butt kick for that design) on the rear of both heads. I then checked all wires, connectors, and plugs, especially the one on the ECM on the cowl panel. All voltages were correct. As I disconnected the battery each time, the codes would reset.

After fighting with this for a while I just gave up, but I was not paying any attention to the idle speed. I noticed that the truck just would not idle right. It was lopey and when it would start that, on came the CEL, then the camshaft codes would reappear. Out came the throttle body cleaner, but it was no help with the idle. The throttle body was so dirty, I took it off to clean it, along with what grime I could get out of the intake tubes. After doing this the truck ran fine for about a week, then started the SOS again.

I have had problems with the local dealership in the past. It was sorta like this, take it in for one problem, get that fixed, then another would appear. I later found out that this was a common happening there. I cannot remember what that procedure is called, but it makes for repeat service calls. So the dealer was out.

I knew the problem was somehow related to the idle control and on the 6.2L I found out that between the ECM and the idle control, there is only one sensor that will affect it. Here is another kick in the butt to the Ford Engineers. Yep, they sure did. Those geniuses decided to put the crankshaft position sensor basically under the intake manifold. Replacing the sensor requires new gaskets and more than likely new intake bolts due to corrosion. I had to have both. $140.00 for parts. Yes I used Motorcraft parts. Just tired of the failure rate for Chinese knockoffs.

All of this expense to replace an $18.00 sensor.

So far, so good. No codes, trucks runs like it used to.

I did have to go to the dealership to get the KAM reset. Guess all of the battery disconnects blew its' little mind. The highway mileage is now back to 17-18 range with my heavy foot.

Just wanted everyone to know about my little adventure....

Good morning Paul and glad you figured out the problem. We didn't sell a lot of the 6.2 crank sensors but we did hear the complaint about the location.
OH and glad to see you back!!

Stop in WV and send Joe a nasty gram to get back on!
