TPS sensor

I just bought my first FORD, after being a religious General Motors man for the last 20 years. It is a 90 F150 5.8L extended cab, long bed, automatic, overdrive, etc... I put a reader on it and the codes that came back were 53 and 98. Everything I have read about these codes says to replace the TPS. My question is does the TPS effect the idle? My truck will idle up to 2-3k and when driving the rpm's go high before it shifts. Sometimes at higher speeds with downshift.. It does this whether the overdrive is on or off. Some say its other sensors or a vacuum leak.. I have sprayed carb cleaner around and didn't find anything.. Any help would be great..

Yes.. idle problems can be related to the TPS and you have a code for it so either the sensor is bad or the wiring between the sensor and computer is open.. which isn't common but possible.

I replaced the TPS and sure enough no more idle problems.. I cannot believe a $35 sensor can make such a big problem.. THanks for the solutions...
