I have a 1950 ford F-1 and I am currently working on putting a limited-slip rear differential in it. Since I'm going to be driving it in icy conditions I want four-wheel-drive but I am not sure how to about that. Every time I think about it I always get stuck up on how the steering linkage would work and what kind of transfer case I would use for my transmission. I am switching it over to a T5 transmission if that makes any difference.
One of the issues with axle swaps is the width. These trucks are a bit skinnier that modern trucks (post 73). Although, with a 4x4 you have more leeway as to tires/wheels ticking out past the fenders.
Since you are going with a T5 trans I would think an appropriate transfer case should be easy to come by. Everybody and their brother used the T5; Ford, GM, Volvo, Jeep, etc. I guess it goes without saying that the transfer case will kind of dictate the front axle, or at least which side the pumpkin is on.
Good luck with it. These trucks as 4x4's look really tough!

I have a friend who wants to sell his 1997 Chevy 2500 4x4 to me, I was hoping to use the front suspension and axle for my truck. The track widths are within 2 inches which is pretty close... would this work to swap it?
Many things are possible, but do take an honest assessment of your skills, tools, and work space before embarking on this journey. There are many online classified ads with unfinished projects that consist of attempts to marry various components that were not designed to go together. What seems simple on the surface can get complicated. Please do not take this as a slight, as I do not know your skills, tools, problem solving ability. Do go into this with eyes wide open.
It would probably be easier to swap the body onto the 4x4 frame. Anything is possible with the right amount of time, tools, determination, and money.
My buddy has done lots of body swaps on old trucks. His daily driver is a 41 White retrofitted to a mid 70's Chevy 2wd chassis. He has also swapped a mid 40's International onto a Dodge 1 ton diesel chassis, old Dodge power wagon onto early 80's GM 4x4 frame, etc.
