51 F1 4x4 conversion "help"
Hello FTE 'er's...
I am converting my '51 F1 to 4x4 (moving to Montana). Got Dana 44 axles from a '79 Bronco already installed, now need a transfer case - the F1 has a mid '80's 302 w/AOD trans, which I want to keep for the od aspect of it.
I have heard that an 86ish Bronco w/5.0 came with the married T/C, i think the NP208, but am not sure.
Thanks,
Bob

Well, first I should have welcomed you to the FTE board. You've stumbled onto the best '48-56 Ford truck board. The guys here are A-1 and super friendly so if you have any questions at all ask away.
You don't have enough posts, you need 25, to use the site search feature or send messages to fellow board members. IMO, I think it's kind of a dumb requirement but I guess it was implemented to avoid spammers. I contacted jpb222 for you and asked him to stop by this thread.

Hi, I have done a 4x4 conversion on mine and have helped a lot of other folks set up there conversions.
Since you already have the engine and tranny installed why not use a divorced t-case. If you need one I have a dana 24 sitting in the corner of the garage that I will sale cheap if you are local enough to pick it up.
From my memory there are aod's with a 4x4 extension to use a np208 BUT the frame is too narrow on an f-1 to fit it without hacking the frame bottom flange or installing it really low in the frame...so I think a divorced t-case would be the way to go for you.

Hey bobj49f2, I "will" figure out how to get pics on this FTE forum... somehow... since I heard from a lil' birdie that the FTE folks ... like ... PHOTOS... ok.. O'm not yellin' - lol
Hey jpb222, not sure, but I may need to go to the "installing it low in the frame" mode, because I think I need a wide T\C to clear the wide AOD. I will check out the Dana 24 as I am not opposed at all to the divorced T\C in any way. In fact my first "new" pickup was a '72 Ford F250 with all the bells and whistles and it had the divorced T\C, but with that model the thing "did" in fact hang down - thus, the factory "highboy".
I live in Colorado BTW.

OK jpp, I was totally thinking of a different auto trans when commenting on the width of the AOD. It's not very wide at all. So, on the center to center of main drive line to front drive, my optimum "window" of front drive shaft route is 8" to 11".
And clearance to frame is a scant "15 from center of drive line to frame.
So, how would that divorced Dana 24 work out within these parameters?
Thanks

If you want to keep an AOD find a 4x4 version one from a mid 80's Fullsize truck/Bronco with a 5.0L.
Then get a NP205 transfercase from a 78-79 Ford 4x4 ( married type ) . The NP205 will bolt right up to the 4x4 AOD. And it's much narrower then the NP208/BW1345. It should fit much better.

Great advice guys!! Thanks!! I'll post some photos when I figure out how.(when I tried to attach a file, it says to "post url here". Any "advice" on this procedure?? What the heck is a "url" - looks like they want a website or?? A pic is just a pic... isn't it??? Thanks
Load your pics on photobucket. Scroll over the picture a menu will drop down. Click on the IMG code link. it should automatically copy it. Then just paste it in your post.
