Thinking about upgrading worn out steering on 63 unibody. Would like opinions on the performance online rack and pinion system. Has anyone installed this kit , what problems popped up and how it performs.
I for one would think of just putting that $1000.00 plus into a complete rebuild of the stock stuff. I've also have heard {no first hand knowledge} of the steering shaft binding when not on level ground!! I mean it would have to move with the R&P mounted on the axle..
Your going to need a power steering pump, ps pump hoses, a mount for the pump and possibly a add on pulley on the crank. This kit is used if you want to continue with the stock solid front axle. I have it on my 64 with the original 292 Y-block and the solid front axle. I had already redone all my front suspension and put in a tilt steering wheel prior to the rack and pinion steering. I love it one of the best mods I have done.
Thanks for info. I already have power steering setup on truck , but it's a cobbled together system and wanders like a drunken cow . Replaced king pins and tie rod ends and spindle bearings so far . Am going to add tilt column. What length and column did you use ?
