I can't believe someone kills 48 women and they put him in prison? He deserves to be hanged immediately. What is wrong with the people in that western state? Insane, you say? The people in the justice system are the insane ones.
I think the "bigger" picture here is the fact that the families of the 48 victims will now have closure and in some cases proper burials. In addition, being able to close out 48 murder cases will save law enforcement both money and manpower that can be used to fight other crimes. Looking at it that way, it's the least of two evils.
I learned something during the McVeigh trial and subsequent execution. That is that it isn't necessarily the best way to rid society of the evil that certain men do. Now, I am still for the death penalty, but I listened when someone said that there was an awful lot to be learned from a guy like mcveigh if we could somehow get inside his demented mind. What if we were able to identify something in the brain that makes us able to tell if that person has the capacity to do that type of evil? I am not talking about torture, either. That is tantamount to plain, old fashioned revenge, and not what God had in mind. I am talking about trying to find clues for law enforcement in future crimes. I mean, certain people- Bin Laden and Hussein, for instance- should be killed on sight. They are, IMHO, the very essence of evil, while a guy like Mcveigh may have just been missing the part of his conscience that allowed him to feel guilt. So, is there something to be learned from this guy in Washington??? If we kill him right away, we'll never know.
I agree with stu37d,
I am all for exterminating the scum. But there is a certain Pathology that can can extrapolated form these Arch criminals. To give investigators any additional knowledge on how to ID or track down future killers is invaluable. Especially if it helps save even one life. Think of the events in the movie Silence of the Lambs. I know it was "hollywoodized" but basically it gives you a profile of who to look for.
From what I understand. The "green river killer" killed alot more then 48 people. The deal was in part made so that in time he can provide the answers to many more unsolved murders in the area. I think that the closure would be helpful for the victims families. To pass judgement on the prosecutors who handled the case without knowing all of the related issues is short sighted.
You are sending a message to killers that they understand as" if you kill women, we will let you live so we can study you!". That will not work. You need to send the message to the scum that it understands as" if you kill women, we will see that you have a death that is more painful than that of the sufferings of the victim and the victim's family".
Do you have a wife, sister, or a daughter? How would you feel if a murderer did harm to them? Would you like to see them have a nice comfortable life in a prison being studied by a psychologist or a hanging after a trail by a fair jury?
I'm glad I live in Georgia. We execute murderers. Do you really think it is OK to kill people and live your life in Prison ? I think if a person is found guilty without a shadow of doubt they should be executed. The more painfull the better. This guy has admitted to killing at least 48 women and now will spend the rest of his life in prison. Fed by tax payers. maybe someone should stuff his drawers down his throat and watch him choke to death.

I thank God that I have never known a woman who was killed, and nobody close to me was raped. my heart goes out to those families, but I cannot relate on that level. What I suggested was to study these men, not give them creature comforts. I can't say that these men's deaths would sadden me in the least, my baser instincts are an eye for an eye. I merely believe that there may be something useful we can learn from their sick, twisted minds. I don't believe torture is proper, either.

What good does that do anybody? I mean, aside from satisfying your anger? I believe the death penalty has its place, don't get me wrong, I just don't think it should be used as revenge, as I said before.
What causes more suffering? A quick, easy painless out by lethal injection, or spending the rest of you life in prison, fearing that tomarrow you will be Bubba's bitch?
Gary isn't the strong type that would survive in prison. While execution sutifies the eye for an eye need, it also provied Ridgeway with an easy out. This way he spends the remainder of his life in fear, and having to live with his sick, twisted mind.
If we end the guys life in a tortous manner then how much better are we than him? And as for the economics of it all I have heard that it actully ends up costing the taxpayers more in the long run for them to set on death row. I do believe in the death penalty in certain cases, but it should be swift with limited appeals.
And do you think there is any kind of treatment to this guy that would be a deterrant to others like him? Even if you had the guy drawn and quartered in the town square I doubt it would have any effect on other demented souls.
But you should know a few things about the death penalty. It has not proven to be a deterent for violent criminals. The death penalty provides no statistical evidence as to stopping people from commiting murder. Secondly these serial killers could care less about the death penalty. For them taking their freedom and subjecting them to rapes and beatings for the rest of their lives is far worse then falling asleep and not waking up. Max security is no picnic either. They are locked up for 20 hours a day and do not get the comfortable lifestyle like the medium and minimmun security people do.
How are you supposed to know how to catch the next serial killer if you don't learn form this one? It took a very long time to catch Gary Ridgeway. He started killing 22 years ago, and it took this long to catch him? I guess thats acceptable for you as long as you get to execute him when you eventually catch the next serial killer. If we don't learn now we pay later.
