///// Trans questions ... Also, fluid and level /////

HI All,

Looking to change the trans fluid in my automatic trans (1990 F250 .... 7.3 IDI)

On my other trucks the dipstick has instructions on it as to how to measure fluid (example idling hot in neutral etc) but the dipstick on my truck is not like that (just a wire with a plastic end to show level).

How is fluid measured ? I am guessing just like checking oil .... i.e. engine off and look at the level on the dipstick?

Also, if I drop the pan to change fluid / filter how much trans fluid should I buy ?

I would not mind running a good trans fluid ....ideally full synthetic..... Mercon 5 ?

Anything else to drain the converter or just drop the pan and go?

Also,

Looking to add a large thermostatically controlled trans cooler (the 40K GVWR canadian cooler .... I think made by Dana off amazon)

I am thinking of plumbing it in after the factory aux cooler ..... is that the best way ( I will keep the in radiator cooler).

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Andrew

auto trans fluid is checked engine running in neutral with fluid hot.
i would not add a large cooler unless you are seeing high trans temps. too cool trans fluid is almost as bad as too hot fluid.

There were two automatics available in 1990. The three speed C6 and the four speed E4OD.

Check the level with the trans warmed up, engine idling, and the shifter in park or neutral.

About 8 quarts. You'll change almost half of the fluid this way.

I recommend Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. It is MERCON V rated.

I recommend this method: https://www.ford-trucks.com/articles...-transmission/
It was written for the E4OD. If you have a C6 some of the details change.

Do NOT add it after the factory cooler. Three coolers in series is too much restriction. You will have less cooling and even more importantly less flow the lube the rear half of the transmission. Replace the factory cooler with an improved one.
