You should plan on new bearings and I think you have to get them pressed on to the axles, so you'll be able to see all the sizes involved. You are changing from 28 to 31 spline so at least the ID of the bearing would be different--I think--.

I appreciate the answer. Yes, they will have to be taken to a shop to get the bearings and seals swapped out. I'm just hoping I don't ha e to change the housing as well.
Said to be same width at 65 or 65.25 inches, with equal length axles and large bearings.
Ford F-150 9-Inch Axles:
The Ford 9-inch can be found under 1974-1986 F-150s and 1978-1986 Broncos. It features the legendary Ford 9-inch ring and pinion strength, 5-on-5.5 lug pattern (same as older Jeep), a 65-inch width at the wheel mounting surfaces, large-bearing semi-floating axles, and many can be found with hefty 31-spline axleshafts. Another bonus is that the axleshafts are of equal length, so you’ll only need to carry one spare should you choose to.
Before you lay a wrench anywhere, consider looking at the entire S319D axle, housing and brakes. It it has larger brakes and is a direct bolt in, I'd go for that.

So, it was suggested that the 2 may have different types of bearings. My 79 has a rear axle bearing like the front wheel bearings. Is it possible that the donor would have a sealed bearing and if so, would either work in my housing?
I'll be able to answer this question tomorrow when I go to the storage unit. Didnt know if the difference between the 28 and 31 spline axles made a difference in bearing outer diameter.

Swerving suggestion.
I am considering this option but the entire housing will need work. Brake lines, vent lines, brakes, etc. I guess I should have known it wasn't going to be as easy as anticipated.
DNK about the bearings. Tapered roller and ball are the only ones I've seen.
So after going to storage, the bearings are the same type so I am having someone change the bearings and seals.
I pulled the chunk on my 79 today and wanted to post the numbers off the ring gear.
