So I'm out in the shop under the truck last night and I'm looking at the underside of the body. I see something hanging down from the drivers side of the bottom of the bed. It's a tag, much like the tag you find on the cowl with the serial number stamped in it.
Anyone ever see this before. The truck has 42000 on the clock and the P/O and myself assumed it was 142000. He was the second owner but only had it for a year. It originaly came from Myrtle Beach and was owned by a police officer. Im thinking it may have been a police vehicle originally. I'm begining to wonder if it may only have 42xxxx on it as this truck is as stock as it gets when it comes to under the hood and the mechanical parts. All very original including the vacuum set up. It is even black and grey but as you see in my pics, the gray is on the outside and the black is in the middle. I haven't seen one like this, it's usually the other way around. It even came with the owners manual and the warrenty book.
The mint bed we got off a F.150 2wd. had a tag like that on the front of the backpanel on the passenger side. It was held on with a sheetmetal screw and had numbers stamped into it. I never looked it up but I assume it is the trucks vin or an plant assembly code to tell what bed went with what truck.
My 77 F100 as a tag screwed to the front of the box on the passenger side. There is also a "buck tag" screwed to the firewall under the hood.
My truck was originally shipped to Jacksonville and built in Norfolk, VA.
With the vintage Mustangs, the buck tags varied in content and location depending on the factory. I would think the same might be true for the trucks. I haven't found anyone who can decode the tags.
Buck tags are used by assembly line workers. They refer to them as the tags have codes which tell the workers what parts to install on a specific vehicle.
Some of the info can be decoded as it's similar to what's on the Warranty Plate.
See pic in post #3. The tag sez it's an F250 4WD Regular Cab Pickup / XLT / 133" wheelbase / 360 2V / Bench Seat / Assembled in San Jose, CA
Some of the codes I haven't a clue what they refer to. Some I can't make out, like the 6th digit of the VIN / YA may refer to the exterior colors, if so it's tu-tone paint, one of which is black (A).
skidoodave, just found a bucktag last night in my information for my truck. My tag is similar to the one that 70Bronctx posted but my tag's information is rearranged slightly different on the tag. Mine has the word "short" on it like it was a tag for my original short bed. Think mine is for the bed and not the cab. I should try and post a pic sometime. Where exactly on your box is the buck tag screwed to?
Waaaay effing cool. Thanks for pointing that out. My 4WD rig is titled as a 2WD cuz it's wearing the 2WD cab! Now maybe I can determine what the F-Bomb was born with.... I'm heading out to the yard with a flashlight right after I get off this 'puter. I'll check back and post my success (or failure).
Hard to decipher and not sure why, Fox body Mustangs forums have accumulated a wealth of information from the body buck tags. So, Gold 79 you just have 1 fuel tank in the rear? FT.c, we need to start a library of the body buck tags to compare with the equipment installed. Box tags would have had info for the colors/trim and fuel tanks. Not sure on the year but mid 70's cabs have them also.
