Spark Plug Wire keeps popping off while driving

So after much consternation, I have one cylinder where the spark plug wire keeps popping off. I have trimmed the bottom of the plug wire to ensure the metal loop inside the wire is able to click into place on the top of the spark plug. But after doing this, within about 10 seconds or so of acceleration (nothing sporty), you can hear it pop off and then it starts misfiring. At this point, I think air may be getting past the plug, but do not have the means or the tools to test this, and if this is the case, I would appreciate some recommendations on how to fix this.

I have a 98 with the 4.6, so I have a coil pack on each side of the engine and regular spark plug wires going to each spark plug.

In the below image, you can see the plugs going to the first three injectors and barely the spark plug wires. Just past the electrical conduit going to the throttle body, you can see the spark plug wire for cylinder 3 just hanging out there, sitting on top of the intake.

Thank you.

Sounds like you need a new plug wire.

I just replaced the plug wires a month ago. Should I replace them again? I have another brand new set.

I would replace the one giving the problem and see if it fixes the issue. Make sure the length is correct for the plug position. If it too short the engine movement may cause the plug wire to disconnect.

You should be able to take needle nose pliers inside the boot and pinch / squeeze the metal electrical connector together making it a tighter connection
Then check it for being tight with a spare spark plug
Good luck

Then take it to a shop or that plug wire will be the least of your worries.

It looks like the spark plug wire length is a little short

squirt some WD40 around the plug base... Leave the plug wire off... Startup the motor and see if it shoots the WD40 out... Threads may be leaking on the plug.

You can usually hear it shooting the air out with every pop when a spark plug is loose
Good idea Steve about the WD-40

Spark plug socket 3/8th drive ratchet one or two 6in. extensions one swivel. Very basic tools if you are going to do any work yourself. Cheaper than paying a shop. You can borrow a torque wrench from most auto parts stores. If you can change the wires you can do this just use the correct torque and a little anti-seize. Baby powder works good too
EDIT baby power for finding leak NOT to replace anti-seize

Switch the suspect spark plug with another beside it and see if the problem transfers. Or just install a new spark plug and see if the problem disappears .
