Hello I have a 99 f250 superduty 7.3l automatic 4wd long bed....truck has been working fine and all of sudden I go to start and nothing...everything lights up on dash as normal but when I go to start nothing happens, the air bag and brake light does go out/turn off while everything else stays lit. I hear the relays clicking from inside cabin fuse panel as well as relays in engine compartment fuse panel.... I do not hear anything from the fender mounted starter relay/solenoid. I did hear click from glow plug relay at one point but I don't anymore.
I have two new fully charged batteries, I did replace glow plug relay with a cheap duralast one from AutoZone - was only place/part available at night. I am able to start the truck if I touch both terminals together with a screwdriver to the fender mounted starter relay solenoid and starts right up .
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated
If everything appears to be functioning properly (ignition, PCM, IDM, etc) and you are able to start the truck by shorting the large terminals on the starter relay, I would replace that.
Check the wiring and lugs for corrosion or poor continuity if you like before making a purchase.
Be aware that the GPR/AIH relays are NOT the same as the starter relay, even if they look identical at a glance.
If it's an E99, it won't have an AIH. There is a small lug on the starter relay, what happens if you pull it off (It's just a push-on) and apply power to that lug?
Before throwing a relay at it, check for cranking voltage at the small wire while trying to crank. Wiring a test light to it you can see from the drivers seat is helpful if your working alone.
Did you try cranking in neutral?
Beefy may be on it. Did you try holding the shift lever up, or wiggling it while trying to crank? I have to do that from time to time on mine. Someone will be along to properly explain what your problem is if that gets it to start!
