I have a 2004 f350 with the 6.0 and I have a transmission out of a 05 v10 truck for it. Will this transmission work with my truck? they are both 5r110 trannys.
Other than the torque converter it will work fine. You need a converter for a diesel, the gas converters are different.
Absolutely off topic, Have you ever discussed the design of the transmission, such as why y'all went with a 2x3 transmission in the first place? Also, I've seen you mention the 3-5 shift around 0 degrees was impossible which is why it does 3-4-6 instead, but I can't remember you ever discussing why it was impossible. If you've already answered that I'll start googling a little harder but questions like this have been bugging me lately. They kept using the 5r110 up till 2015 in the F53 motorhomes long after the 6r140 came out so y'all must have made a hell of a transmission for Ford to keep using it.
Hey Mark, for people like the OP, is there a good tell to know when they get a salvaged trans it has a diesel or gas torque converter?
The way to tell is the number of studs on the converter. The diesel has 6 (8?) and the gas has four.

It was designed that way for cost reasons.
At temps below 0°F we could not get the 3-5 shift to feel right. On this shift the direct clutch has to apply while the intermediate clutch has to release. They have to each complete what they are doing within 30 milleseconds (0.030 seconds) of each other or it feels terrible. We never went in depth as too why it wouldn't work correctly at that temp, but it didn't. The easy fix was to just shift 3-4-6 instead of 3-5-6. It happens so infrequently over the life of the trans that it is a non-issue.

Awesome responses as always, thank you Mark. It's crazy to see a 2x3 evolve into a standard 6 speed and now a 10 speed in trucks hitting over 45,000lb GCWR
