I got a new muffler, looking at headers now. But, if I get headers shouldn't I get a new catylitic converteR? I have 3'' cat back exhaust now, so obviously get a 3'' cat? What about the o2 sensor(s)?
O2 should be in the y pipe between the headers. there are many options for high flow cats and such. as long as the headers are designed for the truck they will keep the stock y-pipe... or you can get a replacement high flow y-pipe. these trucks have two cats.... a pre-cat and the large catalytic converter.
one cat is actually built into the y-pipe. The other is located just behind the y-pipe. They are two seperate cats, but they are not the same. The one built into the y-pipe is smaller than the other, which is the size of a standard cat. You can purchase a performance y-pipe with performance pre-cat, which is what most places call the smaller cat.
I think most aftermarket y-pipes have only one cat, because there really isn't a need for two anymore. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think one is an oxidation cat and one is another type. Most newer cats are 3 way, which has both types of substrates in it, and will do the job that two were used for OEM.
