If an engine is going to be built an sitting on a shelf waiting for someone to buy it.
Then, I can see pouring warmed up Vaseline into the oil pump to insure it self primed when put into service.
If Oil was used over time it may weep out over time.
I've always just primed with like 30wt. engine oil then run a drill with a 1/4" hex shaft into the pump drive shaft before starting until , I see oil at the rocker arms.

Well Orich, this puppy is going to be sitting over the winter. I was planning on putting oil in it and doing what you said and then draining it before I button up the truck for the winter.

What do you think?
Yeah and put the oil pump drive rod in and run a low speed drill in reverse to prime the pump with using a 10"+extension shaft or one that will reach the oil pump drive rod with a hex shaft. The whole oiling systems I'd prime. Put a none bleed back oil filter on it to help keep the oil go throughout your oiling system.
As you want to keep any rust from starting inside where you can't see Right:

Interestingly enough the Melling FAQ recommends not packing an oil pump with vaseline or grease, fwiw. Not saying this doesn't work, but that's what they say.
The shop manuals, & Melling pump instructions say to submerge or fill the pump with clean engine oil. The shop manuals don't mention anything about spooling up the pump with a drive extension through the distributor hole either. That's not a bad idea but it isn't strictly necessary either. When I replaced the pump in my Y block on initial startup the idiot light didn't even flicker, it had good pressure right away.
