Typical fuel mileage

Alright I know this is just beating the dead horse but with fuel going sky high right now what is everyone doing for mileage? I’ve got a 96 single cab long bed auto totally stock except for an intake. Pretty sure it’s 4.10 gears but I’m getting 15mpg both highway and city, I had an extended cab manual with 33s exhaust and tuner and I would be getting 17-19 on the hot tune. Anyone have any recommendations for my poor single cab before I go out and buy a cheap clapped vw tdi??

If getting 2mpgs is a deal breaker, get a beater. Fuel prices are far from topped out.

I feel your pain. My Honda is seeing more road time than in weeks past. My truck is way more fun to drive.

So your fuel conservation VW TDI that you have to buy and maintain to save money will cost you a pile plus No 2 is $1/gal more in my area than RUG...

Are you really saving money?

If you haven’t done a 3” downpipe do it that’ll help and a chip with a good eco tune. Once it’s over 30 degrees I’ll be on my motorcycle pretty exclusively haha 40 mpg almost seems to low now too around here

Do you simply prepay $500 or do the OTR truck pumps run past $100?

My biggest gripe is having to turn the damned thing off and then restart to fully fuel.

All pumps are not created the same. Some will go above $100, some will stop at $75. This forces me to carry more then one card and keep running them. Fifteen years ago I used to only stop at truck stops but they have gotten greedy. Much better deals are found in town. Another reason I put in a lot of capacity so I can pick and choose stations. In 2007 in Detroit I was paying five dollars a gallon so I'm sort of used to it.

For 42 years I have driven VW diesels. Started with a 79 Rabbit and now have 4 TDI Beetles. I can take any one of them down the freeway at 80mph and get 40mpg. I once got 50mph but that's only because I was site seeing. The Prius's are getting all the attention and the VW diesel doesn't get any attention. Great little motor, especially now with the turbo's. What I paid for my all my Beetles people go out and spend three times as mush for newer cars. I wish one could pull my 5er!

Copied and pasted from Fuelly, using search parameters limiting it to '96 diesels. Thus only 7 vehicles but almost 68,000 miles. Looks like you are doing OK, but not the best of the group:

"Based on data from 7 vehicles, 228 fuel-ups and 67,903 miles of driving, the 1996 Ford F-250 gets a combined Avg MPG of 14.80 with a 0.45 MPG margin of error."

Thumbs up

I have noticed the truck stops are nearly $1/gal more than smaller joints which is odd. Agreed with using the card too much, BTDT being cockblocked by Amex (hey 3% back works!) after fueling up three vehicles. I had to call them, verify it was me topping off my crap...this was years ago. They assumed it was a fraud deal, no issue. But now, hopefully they get it. It will run me $175ish to fuel both tanks as of today at $5.20/gal.

My dumb '07 Hybrid Civic only does about 42 freeway, my '05 coupe with a weenie D17A1 and manual does nearly the same. No insurance penalty due to odd parts, no weight penalty, etc. Waiting for someone to offer me some silly cash for the '07 and it is gone!

To keep on topic, my 7.3 does about 10-10.5 city only and about 15-16mpg freeway only. ECLB dually, S5-47. Typical freeway speeds around 65-70mph. 10+16=26. Divided by 2 = 13 is my average.

Im getting only 12 mpg on average as a 97 crew cab long bed 4x4. But I think that once I replace my up-pipes i will get better mileage. My turbo is only putting out 5 psi max right now.

Krusty recently averaged 17.5mpg on the way back from the beach. that was highway at 70-75mph. Intake, downpipe and Hydra tuner (probably on the 65hp daily tune for that trip)

I still only get 12 mpg, now with an upgraded turbo, hydra, up-pipes, downpipe and new injectors. Very disappointed, how some guys get 17 mpg I can't understand. CCLB 4x4

Tire size, gearing in rear end , speed at which driven. If i went over 65 mph I could see the fuel gauge drop lol Mine is single cab. Apples and oranges My 99 extended cab would get in the 20's with 373 rear and automatic trans. my 94 no load would get about 16-17 with zf5 and 410 rear end when not working. ( when working 12 to15 mpg} I am a flat lander in FL.
